Brake Calipers
Question
Will the front brake calipers fit, without modification from an 86 to an 83? Problems?

No idea here, but i do know the offset is different so i'm not sure if that will be a deal breaker. What is wrong with you're current set?

The offset is the exact same in 83 and 86. 83 has a different part number from EVERY other year. So while I would assume it should work just fine, I honestly don't know.

Ezra, they need to be rebuilt and I'd rather take a set that is off another car, rebuild them at my leisure, at my own speed and just replace the old ones.
That said, both of you (ezra and Banf) said differing opinions on the offset?? Anyone else know for sure?

Offset didn't change until 87+. 85.5 and 86 cars just had aluminum control arms instead of steel. Same offset for sure http://www.cantonia.com/wheel_offset.html

Sorry, by offset i meant wheel's didn't know anything about the actual caliper offset.
Rebuilding the front's is easy. Getting the right materials is another story. Shop manual says to use paste to assemble the caliper internals seal/piston. And then it is recomended to use a silicone grease like the kind dow makes on the inside of the dust boot to keep moisture out and from rusting which you will see when you takes you'res apart. I recently did my rear calipers wich are a huge pain in the but so I made sure i did it to the extreme. and used Brake cylinder assembly lube on the piston seal and in the piston cup ( brake fluild is a no no) Permatex ultra disc assembly lube ( green bottle) for inside dust boot ( rubber safe) ATE plastilube on on all moving parts and behind brake pads were it makes contact to caliper. Could have used the permatex in place of the Plastilube but I already had Plastilube :P Now i am confident that i will not have to rebuild calipers for another 30+ years :P

Front 83 calipers are very easy to rebuild. Seal kit available, spring clips available here at Pelican. It's one piston.
Different story if the piston or the cylinder housing is bad.

No problem gordon
The brake cylinder assembly lube was kinda hard to find and most of those people didn't know what i was talking about. If you need help finding it let me know the permatex was available everywere even in small packets but i do alot of brakes so i got the whole can so i can re-apply to brakes as needed. If you got a shop you trust you might ask them who they have rebuild there calipers locally. My local Brake & wheel Shop is pretty cool the guy knew exactly what the Assembly lube was and was able to buy it at a local mom and pop autoparts chain " Smith Auto" The brand was mcKay 4 oz bottle for like 5$ and only need to use a few drops here and there so its a lifetime supply
