Tall 5th feeler

I had a tall 5th in my 85.5 and loved it. Does someone in the ca bay area have one, 85.5, maybe consider a trade for a 944s non-lsd? I have a AGP currently installed. Looking for 5S, 7V,

if you mean the .729 ratio 5th gear, i have a broken early NA trans (busted diff, gears are fine) you could take for $75. i could have my brother bring it to you as he lives in SF.

I not sure if i am comfortable another tearing a ta apart yet. Although I am rebuilding my chevy nvg4500 manual transmission. I also liked the smaller 2,3,4 gearing of the 5S. Great pick up around town and 27-30 mpg on the hwy.

Really, it's not bad... here is goes:
-procure replacement rear cap
-Unbolt axles
-Un bolt coupler on trans input shaft & slide back
-unbolt trans mount(s)
-remove trans from car
-remove rear tail housing
-remove retaining bolts
-remove short 5th gears
-install tall 5th gears
-install tailhousing
-intstall new rear cap-plug
-reverse removal
-drive like you stole it... with better gas mileage

We do it twice a week to swap in shorts for talls on race cars!!

Remove the shaft??

There is no need to part the main case to swap the 5th gear!!
The entire 5th gear is located in the rear aluminum tail-housing.

You dont have to separate the main case to swap it...
Its really quite simple!

Ummm, yes. it can be done... however it requires the spare tire well to be removed! There is not enough clearance to remove the tail housing while the trans is still in the car

What exactly IS the rear cap? I am also going to this precedure at some point. I already have the gear set to put in it .

Being able to do it with the trans still in the car does appeal to me. But I don't understand how removing the spare tire will provide more room UNDER the car. Isn't there a well for the spare that sticks down down behind the transaxle? The well would have to be at least bashed in at the front side to provide enough clearance for the rear housing to be removed, wouldn't it??

Dan,
A 944S AGP tranny would make a regular 944 a dog. Taller 1st thru 4th gear!

The tranny is in 3 pieces. The front aluminum body, the cast iron gear carrier assy, then the aluminum tail section or nose cone. The tail section is where the 5th gear pair is located, as Nick stated, and there's not enough room to move it straight backwards for removal without striking the spare tire well. Don't butcher your 944/924S by trying to do this job with the tranny in the car.

I need to replace some bearings on the ta so I"m making plans. I sold my 944 na so i just have the two S. I am not opposed to replacing the TA with the whole tall 5th tranny a 5S, 7V. I wouldn't hurt my babies.
