Make sure it is a relatively new damper. Even though they are quite expensive, the amount of labor involved does not make it worth risking it going out again.

like all rubber components, the rubber dampers most commonly fail due to age and heat - a used damper is very likely to fail, and with the hassle of getting it in and out, you will not be happy when it does

You can replace the damper with a good used flywheel, pressure plate, and clutch combination from a manual trans car. As long as they are good enough to clamp it will work as a permanent coupling.

i sure wish that worked for a 968 - unfortunately the bell housing is entirely different, and i've been told that there is not enough room in the tip bell housing for the DMF

Howabout an S2 flywheel, and use the S2 damper?

haven't tried - that project is down the list a few on the "new products development" list

obviously a fair amount of flex is needed for the tiptronic on the 968, as the amount of torque is substantial, and without it the transmission itself would suffer

i just haven't had the motivation for diving into it, as the OEM item is still available, and is only about $700 - with the labor involved, that's just too close to the cost of any replacement package, which may or may not work, so OEM is currently the safer bet

if and when the damper goes on the white car, i'll revisit this

Thanks for all your help. I just bit the bullet and ordered a new one. Dont want to do all that labor and have another one fail. Maybe the new one will last another 25 years.
