..so wife is graduating....bought her a...

So the wife is graduating and I bought her a present........sorry not a porsche............but

a 2002 Mustang convertible GT.......... Dark Blue, tan interior......blah blah.......... what surprised me they had some factory installed performance stuff to tweek the engine to near 300hp........(chips, custom exhaust, suspension etc)...

I definitely had missed the sound of a rumbling V8. No substitute for cubic inches.............

The wife definitely deserved it.....

Its actually quite a nice ride, definitely one of the best bangs for your bucks out there........

(enough wasting time.........back to the garage to finish my struts!)

Sounds like somebody on this board isn't going to be getting much sleep tonight...... V8 convertible... can't go wrong really, too bad you only get the independant rear end on the Cobras though. Have you heard about the 2003 Cobra?? Ford is stepping it up, supercharged 390 HP and 390 torque for under $35k. It's kind of a porker though, over 3700#. It still should do under 5 sec 0-60 and become the bang for the buck deal for the new cars.

Why did you choose the Mustang then? Did you think about a 02 Camaro Z28 or Trans Am? I'm just curious.
I got a 94 Z28 once i sold my 944. Nothin like the sweet sound of the 350 LT1! But, too bad my 8 year old Z is still faster compared to your stock hp of 260 and my 275.
Those Gt's are really nice cars though. I like the look and inside. I stopped and talked to a guy with a 99 Cobra, it was a sweet ride!

Bob..

I allready don't get enough sleep This just puts it wayyyyy over the edge.........ohh you could say she is happy....

260hp for the wife is enough..........she allready gets enough speeding tickets........!!! I don't want to imagine what she would do with 390HP!

Penz......

Oddly enough I have always been a ford guy.........but I did check out the SS convertible......beautiful car........but it was about 7 U.S (10,000 canadian) more ..... hard to justify.

TRAITOR........I could not imagine trading in the 944.............unless it was for a GT2!!

Yea, those SS are big bucks when it comes to looking at the Convertible! No. wonder they hardly sell them!
Traitor? I don't consider myself one! haha... i just couldn't afford putting so much money into my 944. It was just getting to be too much. 3500 in two years for a kid who is a Senior in High School was getting out of hand. But, trust me. One of these days I will have a 951 sitting in my garage! I loved my last 944 and since that day, when the new owner drove off, I have missed it and the fun times I had in it. What will happen is that I will probably sell the Z later on down the road and get a 951 in return. Even better, I hope to own both and not have to sell the Z.
Wish me luck!

Penz when I was your age ... the 944 series were just getting going................what a dreammmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm they were............ I love the wide back end and the wide front (kinda the way I like my women, curvy!!!)

So if you are lucky ............~20 years from now you will have a whole bunch of 993, 996 and a whackkkkkkkkkkkk of boxters to choose from!!!!!!!!!

You will have the opportunity to pick up some of the hottest porsches of today.........for next to nothing!! In 20 years or so! (aka 944,951 for people of my generation)

Finish school ........then get all the toys you want!!! GOod luck!

Initially I was searching for a blk 1968 Mustang Fastback then the P-car bug bit me. Now with a 912E, and '86 944 (the first almost complete, the second so to be started, too soon to think about the 3rd) my girlfriend's 22 year brother traded in his 2001 Accord for a 2002 Saleen Mustang.

He wanted to be able to spank both my P-cars...not sure what he paid but I am guessing $35-45k (?).

How is the cornering on the new Mustangs?

I owned one Ford and got to pay for it twice! Now it is a running family joke. Every time we see someone drving a Taurus (tortise) we yell suc-KER! It wasn't a bad car for the first 50K miles then it just fell apart. Well at least you can look forward to turning you mustang into a nice kit car some day. Because of that Ford, I will never buy another American car again -- period. What a POS. Good luck -- you'll need it!

Here's a comparison of Ford's Ultimate offerings, the $53k 1990 CobraR and the under $35k 2003 Cobra. I saw a road coarse test where a CobraR beat a Z06 and Viper GTS in 1990. The suspension and brakes on the R are sweet but it's kind of expensive. If you look at the spring rates they list, you can see what a serious car the R was. As far as the new Cobra, it's weight should keep it from being a better performer than the older bigger engined naturally aspirated R, but i still think it's going to be very very fast and great handling car for it's class, and it's over $18k less money... hmmm, what kinda porsche can i buy for $18k??? The Saleen Mustangs can be both naturally aspirated and supercharged, their suspensions are very beafy and capable, be interesting to find out if Ford keeps selling them thru their dealer network when they release the 2003 Cobra. Saleen Mustangs can have great resale value too, but that's also true of the Cobras.

Yea, but I don't think I want the inventor of the "Pinto" to be the same inventor of my next 450+hp sports car. They just seem to have a real flakey design department, one year they are on, the next year they are back to killing people again.

I have actually have had incredible luck with Fords..

I have owned everything from (never realized how many different fords I have owned???)

75 ford pinto (the true "death trap")...my highschool ride!! lucky me
79 Ford econoline Van
72 Ford F150
85 Ford F250
92 Topaz
91 Explorer XL
98 Windstar Limited
99 WIndstar SEL
02 Mustang

The one thing they all had in common was that they were cheap to maintain (for me anyways)............ and are incredible vehicles for sub zero temperatures.....

I remember changing a waterpump on my 85 truck for 30 bucks Canadian!!!!!!

I think if I lived in a warm temperate climate.... the only one I would own would be the mustang..... I never drove any of these cars to the limit...... but they were put through long tough winters!

My German engineered marvel will never! start below -25 celcius!

Scott sorry to hear about your friend .................I agree they have had some flakey designs! But that last retro t-bird looks incredible! The only car I have ever owned that I have managed to spend at least the same amount as I paid has been my porsche........but I would never give that up.

I'm very sorry to hear about your close friend.

I don't care much for Ford vehicles either (cheap plastic everywhere... in ugly colors... with dashboard components that don't match i.e. different dye lots or something... YUCK!!). Over the years, I've spent enough time in them as rental vehicles when travelling for work, and I've always dreaded driving them.

With regard to your close friend, was Ford found at fault? Was there a liability suit? I hope your friend's family was compensated fairly, although $$ don't ever do enough in the way of consolation.

Again, my deepest condolences. I hate hearing of stories like this... it's just not fair.

Jim

Yes, his family was well compensated. They donated most of the money to a fund for familys that have had losses from Ford products. These were people that were not as fortunate as some of the familys that received cash awards.
