Whats up with escort cup shocks?

So I had pretty much decided that I would go with the Bilstein Escort cup package for my dedicated autox car when I discover that the rear coilovers supplied with it are not designed to support the weight of the car. WTH? I thought the point of the package was to be able to remove the t-bars. I was told that I would need to have the rubber bushing eyes removed and replaced with parts for spherical joints. So I call Bilstein to find out what that will cost and they have no idea what I'm talking about, but did confirm that they are not meant to support the weight of the car. Is there another Bilstein shock body that can be used that already has the right set up? I'm looking for revalvable units with no external adjustments. Koni disappoints me with their 8 week minimum turn times. I was thinking Motons, but with the company still in limbo I don't want to wait until spring to see if AST jacks the Moton product all up. I'd like to get in some tuning runs with what is left of the season. Nothing is ever simple. Anyone have any ideas?

i've driven a couple of cars with the bilsteins now and didn't like any of them on the street - the valving is all wrong - would probably do nicely on the track though

as for removing the torsion bars, i did it and i regret it - if i had to do it over again, i would not have done it - it created a whole nightmare of secondary things with which i had to deal

and yes, you need to run spherical bearings if you delete the torsion bars - you also need to install solid bushings of some type in the torsion housing - you will also need to offset the lower mount with most shocks

I forgot to mention that this car is autox only. It is completely gutted and weighs in at 2413lbs. All suspension pivot points are delrin. Street driving manners aren't a consideration. She will soon have 285 hoosier a6's on all four corners. Once the suspension is in place and sorted we'll turn the boost up to our 400hp target. And develop it more from there. Any ideas on what rear coilovers people are using that have spherical bearings in them?

QA-1. Double Adjustable. You'll need to build a bushing to go from the stock mounts to the SAE shocks; or drill the stock mounts to use SAE hardware.

Some have reported that the upper sheet metal mounts need to be reinforced with really heavy coil-over rates (aka AutoX rates)

I have a set of Bilstein Escort struts and shocks off my old turbo race car and the shocks are not designed to run without torsion bars. That said, I also ran a set of Ledas with full coil-overs on the shocks. My lap times were not much better with the Ledas but with the wide range of adjustment the car turned in much better.

I had Bilstein rebuild and re-valve the struts and shocks that made them work better than the stock settings.

It looks like I will never get around to building another turbo so if you are interested in a deal on the Bilsteins PM me. I have a set of original Escort springs and a set of Eibach dual springs to go with them.

I am leaving for Laguna Seca in the morning and can answer when I return on Tuesday.

There are other rear shock options if youre willing to swap your shock. Ground control has single adjustable rear konis for $650

the problem i have with the ground controls is the same problem i have with most of the setups

without a tender spring and coupler, if you have the torsion bars still installed, is that the the coil spring either drops loose during wheel drop, or pushes up and raises the car if you put enough preload on it to keep it from falling loose

i also don't like gas shocks in the rear - the hydraulics of the carreras i have are much nicer - pricey setup though at about $1300 for the pair

To work properly, all rear coilovers require reindexing of the tbars. The need for tender springs depends on how the tbars are reindexed. I have no tenders on mine and the springs stay seated.

yup - if the torsions are not doing the job of holding up the car, for example having been reindexed, then you would be fine
