WANTED : 944 S2 cabrio right side main bow
I own an 89 944 S2 Cabrio and broke the passenger side bow while trying to remove the top using the automatic system.
Any help finding a replacement part would be appreciated. Thanks |

There are very few cars worth significantly more in parts than as a whole. Some 944's are them

What did the welding of the bows cost. Last I checked on EBAY it was like $1k.

done right, with a reinforcing plate added, welding can work, in manual mode. done wrong, it will cost you a top.
i don't know of anybody who has successfully done it in power mode for very long. it always ends up snapping again, and then taking the top with it. crappy design. i've been in manual mode for years just to avoid this problem. |

It has been three years for mine and no problems yet and I use the top every day (but for rain and snow/ice days). Of course it is in manual mode never liked the power mode anyway.

A competent aluminium welder should be able to weld these so that they are stronger than original. But you must be very careful to use a skilled person. The pieces needs to be very strongly fastened in a jig during the process, otherwise there will be terrible shrinkage. So again, be very selective about who you entrust this work to, and there should be no problem. I paid the equivalent of $140 to have it done locally - the result is as far as I can judge very good. I also helicoiled one of the M10 threads. The Porsche power hood mechanism is another issue, it really seems to be a disaster waiting to happen. |

you would think so, but the material is very soft and porous. a weld by itself still leaves the piece weak. the problem is that the weld is not what fails, but rather the material right next to it, which was just as weak as where it broke the first time.
but, if you add a plate to the weld repair, thus spreading the load out over a larger area, you get something that can withstand normal use. still though, in power mode they tend to break again. the dual motor design is indeed a disaster waiting to happen. |

they are the main bows for the convertible top in an s2 cab.
BTW I converted mine to manual when I got it. You really have to get out of the car either way to put on the cover so manual is just faster and easier. Also is a good practice to help the window fold nicely to minimize wrinkles and hazing the plastic. |

yeah - i was pretty bummed when i got my car
i thought "oh cool. finally a power top" (having come from british stuff that was all manual) then i went to put it down and found out that you had to get into the console to get the handles out, then stop it part way down to put a towel or something down on the window to prevent it from scratching, then you had to get out and put on the boot cover to prevent the headliner from getting all filled up with the crap in the air. the entire process takes a few minutes, and is not what i had hoped for. heck, even a ratty old 80's mustang has a top that goes down quickly at the touch of a button. what was porsche thinking when they allowed ASC to do that? |

How does it compare to the power cab top that was available on the 86 and up 911's? Jackson |
