944 slipping cluth

I have a 1983 944 5 speed with 28,000 miles. After driving for about 20-30 minutes on roads with hills I notice the clutch starting to slip. After 30 minutes, it slips even on flat roads and I have to limp home. Once is sits for a day, no problems on flat roads (with little shifting) but repeats itself after going up hills after 20-30 minutes. Otherwise it shifts and runs great. Does the clutch need replacing or adjustment?

Needs adjusted but if you keep driving it like that it will need a clutch soon.

Check the free play adjustment for the slave cylinder, had the same issue on my 951 when I bought it.

The clutch pedal has to be set at 2-3mm.

If you still have the rubber center disc on the 27K mile car, it might be time to change it due to age.

Check for leaks of the clutch master cylinder by pulling the rubber boot under the dash.

You may have a "spongy" rubber hose from the clutch slave to the clutch MC.

Worn PP will do this as well. The more it slips, the hotter it gets, and the more it sllips.

This is a difficult measurement due to the tension the spring assist places on the pedal. But if you can't feel any pedal free play with your foot when the car is hot it could be the pedal adjustment.

Also, there is a clutch disk measurement on Clarkes. Quote from Clarkes:

"Measure the distance from the front end of the inspection port (edge closest to the front of the car) to the edge of the clutch slave cylinder piston. If the measured distance is 34 mm or greater the clutch disc should be replaced. The distance for a new clutch should be approximately 18 mm."

Even if the clutch is not worn out per this measurement, can it still slip if there is a worn PP? Mine has about 26mm.
