I have an '86 944 non t. I only purchased the car about a month ago. it has arround 124k on it.. really nice condition.. but it has developed a "whining" sound from the rear either left or right. The sound increases with speed. It is to concistent to be a wind/seal sound. so my guess is that it might be a wheel bearing. Might even be the spedo cable. well that was the sound my old bmw made when the speedo cable was shot at the front tire. hope someone can help me out. regarding this. I am new to the bord. so I am wavingly saying hello to all members here.. tia..

Gear box maybe going bad. Change the oil in it and see how it runs then make sure you check the oil for what comes out of the gear box.

Whoa!
Stay away from the J Lube! Don't know how they could have checked the oil in the transaxle. You need a 17mm hex key to get the top plug off to check it. Unless the High School kid owns a 944 and keeps the tool with him, I doubt they even looked at it. Take it to a good Porsche shop or even the local dealer either should be able to do it for you in an hour. I would bring in the oil unless you can find a shop that uses the synthetic SWEPCO or Red Line. I prefer the Red Line. -g

Why don't you take it one step further and learn to do it yourself and save a bundle. I just did mine on Monday, just as easy as an oil change. We can walk you through it. Save your money bud! |

Hi Guys,
I have a simliar problem on my 86 924S, but it only seems to whine between 40-60 mph, above and below all is quiet. Is it still likely to be the tran oil or what?? Much thanks in advance.

This noise can be one of three things.
1. Rear wheel bearings 2. Transmission very common in NA 944 high mileage tranny's 3. Torque tube I've had experience with all of these and they are all a little different. If it's the transmission you wont really hear the noise until you hit about 40mph. The torque tube will be a deeper droning sound. The rear wheel bearings will be constant at just about any speed. Since your car has over 100,000 I would start with a syn. transmission fluid, then replace the rear wheel bearings. It's not a difficult job just, just time consuming. After that it gets to be a little more expensive. I've rebuilt my transmission and had the torque tube rebuilt by DLS of Atlanta and now the car is very quite and smooth. I should get another 100,000 miles or so since I did most of this work after I hit 160,000. All in all it cost me less than $1200 since I did all the work myself except for the torque tube which cost $550 at DLS of Atlanta (404)-361-9111. |

thank you all for the quick replys.
the sound only kick's in above 40mph or so. it is a very soft whining sound actually, and it speeds up as I speed up. I have an appointment for next wheek at the porsche guy to see if he can figure it out. Hopefully he can tell me what it is and I would be able to fix it myself. I use to build racing bmw cars at tony BMR racing back in south africa but have since moved to 3 other countrys and hense a new job/ new field. but you have to hand it to the germans. they shure know how to make cars. beer aint all that bad either

I did not want to start a new thread for this.
I bought a set of brembo cross drilled rotors for the front wheels. Could anyone give me a heads up on what pads to use? I have a friend that has a new set of Jurid's and also a new set of Beck Arnley Gold Organic pads. I searched the forums here and the web to see if I can get more info on them but to no avail. ppl. mention them but not really how they perform and last. From what I know regarding the bremobo rotos are that they dont eat your pads as quicky as the grooved ones so I should expect good life out of a new set. Needless to say I cant afford to spend $200 a pad on something like Carbo Tech Panther. But would like a compromise. I dont want to buy a pad that will not put the rotos to good use. All help would be appreciated.. tia |
