Binding (toing!) sound
 

Hello!

I was wondering if someone could help me find out what the deal is with my suspension... Whenever I turn my wheels (under load, ie not in when the car is off the ground), I hear the sound of a spring binding. So I lifted the car and checked out my coilover assembly to find nothing out of the ordinary... I cleaned up the parts, reassembled and spent a couple of days enjoying a "toing"-free driving experience. But then... it started again... Has this happened to anyone else? Does anyone have any hints? My next plan of action was to buy all the washers and various tid-bits that make up the assembly and re-place them...


Also, I drove the car without power steering for a year or so until I had to throw the belt back on because I was sharing the car with my sister (worst idea ever). My question is, when you have no power steering belt, is your steering linkage put under higher load? In other words, with no power steering, do you place the steering system under higher loads without power steering (anything from the steering wheel down to the wheel hubs)?

your strut upper bearing is worn out..

when you turn your steering and let it automatically goto straight or do you need to help it?

Also check for loose bolts attaching the sway bar to the control arm. 3rd, your steering shaft might be worn out. 4th, check for looseness in your tie rods. 5th, if all else fails, get ear plugs. I like the foam ones that expand in your ear.

+1 on the sway bar bolts.
I had loose bolts where the sway bar mounts to the frame & it made the same "toing" sound, especially when i would turn right up into a drive approach

looneybin: what did you do to prevent the bolts from loosening again? I previously cracked the bracket (probably due to driving on/off my curbed driveway a bijillion times), and replaced both. I'm thinking it could be the bolts that keep coming loose, I'll have to check this weekend.

i just tightened them up, but it might not be a bad idea to use lock washers

If I were you I'd check the springs upper bearings..
They would do that, that the springs will clock when turning.
Because the upper spring plate is "stuck"

What kind of coilovers? If you have "helper springs" installed, they sometimes toing, and there is no-toing you can do about it.
