Horn problems. lots of pictures...
Recently my windshield wipers weren't working right so I took my steering wheel off, pulled the wiper switch unit out, cleaned it, put it back in, and it works perfect now. however, when i took the steering wheel off a brass or copper piece fell out, and now the horn doesn't work. when i've tried to put the piece back in and button everything up. when i turn my wheel to the left the wipers come on, and when i turn the wheel to the right my right blinker turns on...
![]() Bare with me these are the pictures that i took, and your seeing what i see. ![]() ![]() I think that everything looks right behind the horn pad. ![]() ![]() ![]() The back of the wheel looks good to me. ![]() The copper / brass arm, copper disc, and the black plumber pc piece look home made. right? ![]() Someone made 3 notches on one end. ![]() It looks like the PC pipe didn't fit right and split down the center. ![]() everything taken out. Is that the factory setup or was it jerry rigged? or maybe thats not the problem let me know what you think. |

Have you take apart the steering column even further, if not I would. The blinkers and wipers all snap together so you could of possibly caused them to not be fitted correctly; they have to be pushed back all the way to the end of the steering column once they are fitted together.

Is this a 924s? Yours should look somewhat like mine but doesn't. I am also having horn problems.

check all your grounds. One of the biggest problems with Porsche's in general is that they use chassis grounding points. This causes an issues when they get fouled or corroded. I had similar issues in my 88 924s with the wipers. The key is to take out the 4 screws that hold the motor on to the metal plate. If you have a nice bench grinder or a wire brush for a drill, clean up the screws and clean the plate around the screws real well. Get them to a shiny metal point, so you know they are conductive. The wipers are grounded through these screws to the plate and in to the chassis. Disconnect the connector that goes in to the wiper motor and clean it with some rubbing alcohol or connection cleaner is you have, these contacts tend to get fouled as they are right where the water runs off the windshield. if you have a small file that you can fit in, with out damaging the connector it is good to clean it down to copper as well.
If you have a haynes manual, refer to it for the all the chassis ground points, there are 5 or 6 i think. When you find them they should be either 10mm or 12mm with a bunch of brown wires going to rings that are bolted to them. take the bolts out, take all the rings off, get some sandpaper, and sand them down to clean copper again. make sure to sand the base they were screwed in to as well, it is also made of copper. Some people use dielectric grease, i don't but it cant hurt if you have some. A good old electrical engineering secret is to put some wax over it. if you can get a candle over the point drip some wax on it once you have put it all back together. This will help to keep them from corroding again, and will also help from any sparks arcing to a ground point and frying your electronics. I know that seems to never happen but its always good to be safe. The horn grounds in to the wheel so make sure all the joints are clean and conductive. Good Luck dave

Sorry. I had a thought on this but it was off. Im blaming the meds
The shaft should be grounded. That's what they were tryig to do. The bearing should be metal plus it should ground through the rack eventually. Start at the bearing. Why is it not transfering ground to the shaft.

Hi, your pictures showing steering wheel removal was great. Do you remember how to remove the horn pad on the 928 and if so could you tell me. I pullled off the two plastic pieces behind the pad and i dont see any screws.
Thank You Michael |

Shaft should ground from steering rack to crossmember - you'll find the wire to do so. Those copper bits are jerry rigged, that's for sure. I'd be digging deeper, as stated above, to find ground faults. The broken black sleeve is stock. The copper horn wiper ring on the steering wheel rides on the contact on the bottom of the indicator switch plate (seen clearly in your last pic).
