Wheres factory paint cheap? How much would I get for a 951?

I'm looking for guards red. I'll need enough basically for a front end. Who's got it the cheapest? How much is it at the dealer?

On a side note, has anyone recently claimed a 951? I go through allstate. Its an 86 with 120k, but very nice shape, $20k in recent receipts, recent paint job, etc. What can I expect to get for it were I to claim it? We have 7 cars through them, and my dad thinks it will go up too much for it to be worth it, and maybe he'd even get dropped. He figures about $6k. I paid $12k because of a new engine, the paint, new koni susp, etc. It was not specially insured for a higher price. You know, how they come out and look at it and insure it for more, but you have to pay more. So what do you think I can get at just normal coverage? Is he right?

I'm with Allstate and the Porsche wasn't the problem. The problem started when I added my 16 year old son. My insurance doubled!!! He drives a dented (bought it that way) '90 Chevy extended-cab pick-up. Also, I have my Porsche insured for an agreed opon value not the 'blue book'. I just had to send them something from the Porsche/Audi place that was brokering the car for the guy who owned it stating the value of the car. If I total it (God forbid) The insurance pays out $12K mius the deductable. Just adding the Porsche alone, without my son, was only an extra $500/year. I'm 43, amle, and married.

I belive the factory paint was Glasurit. You can take your paint code to any paint shop that mixes it and they can mix it to match.. no on stocks guards red Porsche paint if your car has been repainted you prob should get it matched as even the factory color prob isn't exactly right... My 951 got hit in the rear quarter panel about a month ago.. AAA paid out $3500 to have it repaired replacing the entire panel but only painting the rear of the car...

I am in the process of painting my 944 Guards Red as well. I was going to use Dupont's Chroma One system. Not anymore. I just found out about a month ago that there is a place here in North Bend called Industrial Finishes that sells Glasurit for about half what Dupont sells for. I'm happy.

I am having mine shot with Glasurit this coming Monday. In fact the body shop I am using only uses Glasurit for the P-cars. They say its easily available and the price is in line with most other finishes.

THey only prob with G paint is that it's highly toxic.. you've got to have a full resperation system in the booth a mask won't cut it.

You definately get what you pay for when it comes to painting cars. A good quality paint job is going to cost somewhere around $2,000. The Maaco jobs are shoddy at best, I wouldn't expect one like that to last more than a year or 2. Then you can pay alot more too. You're problably going to find shops that won't do it cause it's not an insurance job, only insurance companies will pay the $3,000- 3,500 that places like that charge. Those places make me sick.

This is exactly what I ran into. Many body shops had turned me away, they were not interested in "restore" type work. But the above post is right on $2k for paint or more. In fact I am paying $4300 for paint and body work which in my case is extensive.

Much depends on what a paint job is going to cost. Obviously most is labor, but quite a bit can be attributed to paint. Just depends on the paint system and the manufacturer. You don't necessarily want the cheapest paint, just like you don't necessarily want the cheapest paint job. You get what you pay for is definitely the axiom to live by here.

By the way Grommit, I can't think of any automotive paint that isn't what I would classify as toxic. It would be unfair and incorrect to classify all Glasurit paint systems to require full respiration. Almost all (that I can think of, have worked with, or know of) paint manufacturers have a product that would recommend full respiration. Any paint system whose catalyst is an isocyanate should be played with only by the professional. The acute and chronic effects of exposure to these types of materials can be, well, pretty nasty.

And Bob, there are lots of people out there paying $3000 - $3500 for a paint job. It depends on what you're having done. I wouldn't even consider painting a 944 for $2000 - $ 2500. Can you find somebody to do it at that price? Sure. Will they do a good job? Maybe, if it's a favor and the guy is a good, no wait, great personal friend. But I would guess that for $2000 a shop sure isn't getting the best paint they can lay their hands on and aren't going to be the most meticulous people in the world in preparation.

And, you really can't get "factory" paint. Factory paint is a totally different animal than aftermarket paints that are applied to vehicles after an accident or because of some other malady. Knowing that, as long as you get a Guards Red in what is traditionally referred to as a "one pack" system, you'll be alright. Keep in mind that solid colored Porsches from the 80's (and earlier) didn't have a basecoat/clearcoat system. The color and the shine came all in the same can...

Just my $.02

This is what I was quoted for Glasurit's Guards Red:

Glassodur Urethane Acrylic (2 Quarts) $156.40
Clear Hardener (1 Liter) $80.70
Universal Reducer (1 Quart) $8.75
