Seat frame replacement.

There's a guy parting an early 944 in bored town Nj and I figured his black leathers would look nice in my car. The car is a total loss, and he explained to me that the front seat frame are bend due to the impact. Do you think I could swap the frame from my crappy seats on to the nice black seats? How much should I expect to pay for the backs,, and the two damaged front seats?

Hello, You can swap the seat parts around with very little effort. I have lots of seat frames, parts and such. I also have a black seat back for the rear seats.

That's awesome. The guy said I can have them if I come pick them up, fronts and backs.

Nice score! If you end up needing seat parts I've got a couple junk sets I'd cannibalize.

Good to know, I imagine I'd need at least one or two things.

Anyone got any ideas on how the rear seats come out?

We're talking the steel seat frame alone? That will be a project to replace.

Yeah I think so. If worst comes to worst, it can't be that hard to straighten the frame with heat. It couldn't have distorted that much.

Honestly I'd take them to an upholstery place and have them do the swap. I'd bet you could find someone who could do it for $100. Heck, you'd need $20 in tools you'd never use again anyway.

I don't remember how the bottom comes out, but the back piece just has two 10mm bolts on each side of the hinge where it folds down. Just fold it down and look at the hinge, peel back the carpet a little and the bolts are right there, IIRC.

Update: picked up the seats. They don't look bent at all and maybe they'll just pop right in. They're very very pretty

Guy had them out and ready to go by the time I got there. I'll reverse those directions for installation and removal of mine.

Looks like a score.
I got my seats from what what was apparently a submarine, so I have to strip off the seat covers an put them on my frames/foam. The ones I bought looked great on the surface but were rusty and stinky underneath. If I ever get power back I will try to finish the job up.

Very nice! Those are the same seats that are in my car, but mine are trashed. If you find another set I'll trade you some parts for them!

I have a guy coming that wants to buy the car, which will give me the resources to buy an 87 944 that's for sale locally. I'm at a loss for how to remove my seats, so I'm just going to let him take it with the trashed ones, and let him have the full set of leathers. Here's to an upgrade soon!

New plan of action: install the rear seats, and just cover the front seats with similar seat covers.

As it turns out, the frames are intensely bend, and my seats are rusted in to my car (figures that's where the only bloody rust would be) and they're staying where they are. I've been trying to skin the upholstery off of the black seats to slip on to my foams that are in the car, but obviously that isn't working. THERE HAS BEEN A LOT OF YELLING DONE BY ME TODAY. AHHHHHHHH

I got a set of sport seats in a parts car. The car had been T-boned on the passenger door, and the passenger seat was almost folded in half.

But the leather on the seat was intact.

I was able to strip off the covers - it isn't that hard if you're patient. There are a lot of little hooks that have to be un-bent. But after a short period, I was able to get both the top and bottom off.

I found donor seats. Putting the leathers on was harder than taking them off - it was time-consuming stretching them over the foam so that they looked right. But they did go on.

There was a little wear on the seam of the bolster on the driver's side. So I also switched seat backs between the passenger and driver's sides.

I've got them in my 951 now and they look awfully damned good.

Total time - maybe 2-3 hours.

That's the seat back that was folded in half now on my driver's side seat. Looks brand new, very nearly!
