Arrow Amsoil ?

Is Amsoil syn gear oil the right stuff to use in the tranny of my 84 944. If so any opinions or experiences with it?

Question

While we're on the subject - can anyone give me some links to tech articles on transmission flushing / maintenance?
Thanks.

Ummm, i dont have any links for you but according to the haynes manual,...

1) Lift car
2) Get under car
3) Remove 17mm hex head drain plug thingy
4) Catch oil in pan
5) Do not get oil in face
6) Put 17mm hex head drain plug thingy back on
7) ... tight
8) Remove 17mm hex head fill plug thingy
9) Put in new oil
10) ... good luck
11) Check oil level
12) Repeat 9 - 11 until full
13) Put 17mm hex head fill plug thingy back on
14) Lower car
15) Clean up
16) Drive car
17) ... slowly at first

Then your done! Its that easy! Even a dumb arse like me can do it!

I would seriously consider making sure I could get the fill plug out before draining the tranny.

Thumbs up

I have a 1984 also and I am getting ready to do the trany fluid...
Previous posts strongly recommend making sure 17mm FILL plug is not seized before draining.

I LOVE synthetic oil! I have run nothing but Mobil one or Syntech in my new cars for the last ten years and the inside of the engines looked brand new after 100K miles!

Note; I said new cars...

Put Mobil one in my 1984 and it started leaking at the front seal... drained and put in Castrol 20-50... looking good.
Was going to put Mobile One into trany...
now I'm going with the Swepco. (from Pelican)
FYI

Why Porsche used a plug with an internal hex rather than external is beyond me.......I can see no engineering reason for it. If I could find a similar plug with the proper thread and an internal hex (like a proper pipe plug) I would use it!!

However....If the plug is seized, which is not all that unusual, this generally works: "Surround" the plug with a pair of Vise Grips, the kind with the curved jaws. This provides outside support to the plug.

I have seen a number of these plugs with the hex broken open since the side walls are so thin. Once removed, please coat with Neverseeze or equivalent when reinstalling. The removal of a totally seized broken plug is not a pretty sight. Requires drilling and this introduces metal filings to the transmission oil.

Good luck

As well as me... who is not only an afficionado, but a very satisfied user... and dealer...

Yes, AMSOIL gear lube (75w90) is okay to use, and needless to say, I highly recommend it...

I too have heard good feedback about SWEPCO.

So... I think you'd be fine with either one.

Good luck.
