intermittent no start problem
 

So my 84 944 ran good for about seven trips and now my problem is back. The car starts and runs a second then dies. I have replaced the fuel filter and refurbished the AFM. The AFM tested OK. It ran great and better but now it is acting up again. I want to ask does anyone think I could have a bad contact at my DEE connector. I took it off to check the AFM and the car ran great for about five trips.
Any help would be great!

PS; The DEE relay is new as are the sensors.

This is what happens when the DME is about to fail. If you have or can borrow a spare, swap it out and see of that cures the problem.

Basically the DME power resistors come loose from the board over time and cause an intermittent no-start that eventually becomes a permanent no-start. If they are the problem you can resolder to the board if you are handy with an iron.

I know I saw a website that shows how to re-solder the DME. I can't find it on FRWilks. Do you remember were it is?

Does the tach bounce on start up? If the tach doesn't bounce, the speed/refrerence sensors are going bad. Had this problem with my car. Would go get milk or something, and my car would start, get out of the store and it wouldn't start, I'd get it towed back to my house, and the next day it would start and run for a little bit and cut off. Intermittent start/running problem. Also check the DME. Theres a way to by pass the DME, I think, so you just run the fuel pump. Check Search Results for "clarksgarage.com" for the DME jumper wire technique and see ifthat helps.

If you do start soldering on the DME make sure you have a proper wattage soldering gun and don't spend a lot of time on each point of repair. If there's any dirt or residue on the point of repair, use a tooth brush and some denatured alcohol to lightly clean it before attempting repair. Make sure the soldering tip is tinned with solder and wiped off with a wet sponge and retinned slightly between each soldering. It's easy to destroy printed circuit boards and components if you aren't experienced. When the solder on the point of repair is liquified and shiny count to 2 and stop. I offer this only because most people don't have the experience in this process and it's too easy to mess it up.
