Porsche Crest 944 race car for sale

It was garage sale weekend in my neighborhood this past weekend. I was driving slowly past a neighbor that has a georgous black 911 carrera whaletail garage queen and a full race 944 (one piece nose/hood/front fenders). Just kidding I said how much for that one? (referring to the 944 on the trailer, uncovered for a change) He didn't hesitate and said $15,000. If anyone is really interested, I'll get more details on the car/engine/ect and snap some pics. I believe this car is track only and not street legal.

Porsche Crest

I have a friend that is interested in the car, so I was there this morning shooting pics and getting more info. This is what I found out... He is a DE instructor, the car will not be available until the end of April due to upcoming commitments. It is not street legal, there are no lights in the fiberglass 'one person can remove' nose section, the only working lights are the brake lights. It would race in stock classes. Basically it's a 2.5L NA, shaved head, no porting work done. The exhaust has a custom header, no cat... tubing is fat... looks to be about 3-4". Front suspension is using coil overs, although the rear is torsion bar, he wasn't sure of the size of the bars. Running on 15" wheels, and comes with a complete set of replacement wheels/tires that are new and have only been roughed in. All the undercoating has been removed, interior is stripped completely, and with the lightweight nose and plexiglass rear hatch, it weighs in at just over 2300#. He has not had the car dyno'd, and estimated the HP to be about 170. He also has spare parts that go with it, including a extra head. The trailer stay with him since he'll be gettin a new racer after his next 6 month long vacation. Here's some pics.....

That appears to be a very clean car, but at $15,000 he may have to be patient to sell it. We just sold our 944na Racecar a few months ago and it was much more heavily modified but had a stock steel body with a similar style GTR nose. Our car was:
- 13:1 compression engine with Carillo rods, X-drilled crank, knife edged and lightened, titanium wrist pins, balanced, balance shafts removed, XL oiling galleys, raceware studs, etc. (45 hours on engine)
- Bilstein TurboCup coilovers all around. Camber truss, poly bushings, slotted strut tower hats, weltmeister swaybars, widened front track, sold with only one set of wheels with mounted rains.
- Custom rollcage, Cobra seat, Sabelts, window net, kill switch, fire bottle
- Turbo calipers and rotors, extra set of stock brakes.
- Larger injectors, rising rate regulator, High output fuel pump, custom burned chip, custom made cold air intake with aluminium isolation box.
- Custom built transmission with oil cooler fittings, Carbon Kevlar clutch, lightened flywheel, short 5th gear.
The car made about 180hp and weighed 2,400#
In the last 3 races, it won 2 and placed 2nd in the other.
We sold it for $9500 with a matching (both car and trailer freshly painted yellow) tandem axle trailer.
The new owner took it to an SCCA School where he won the race beating a stock 944 Turbo.

The problem with race cars is that they just don't hold their value. You can easily sink $35,000 into a race car and only be able to sell it for $10,000 the next day. Porsches tend to do a bit better on resale but not by much. At $15,000 there are far too many other used race cars that go much faster and as reliably. For example, a friend of mine is selling a Datsun 240Z that is a turn-key race car for $5,500. This car will turn lap times equal to our old car. But if your friend is patient, there will always be a Porsche enthusiast who will pay the extra $$ for that badge up front.

David
