wiper motor gear and other stuff
I have an '84 944, and recently had to pull the wiper motor, took it apart, found the gear stripped. Wipers and shafts are free. Had to get used wiper motor on ebay. Does anyone know if the gear/shaft are available and from whom? Motor works fine.
Other thing I wondered about- anyone had problems with the vacuum J tube on the manifold? Had to silicone mine up with big cracks in it. Is there a better replacement than stock $60 one( same soft rubber)? Or just cobble one up with HELP parts and better vacuum hose? Next problem- hatch- latches stick and leaks. Why did Porsche put holes in the lip where the catches go in with out a lip? Leaks around rear edges of hatch? I also have a bad leak into the rear passenger floor. Can't find leaks. What can I use to seal up hatch? Next! I have fuel vapors coming from the fuel vapor catcher/fuel return in the right side of the hatch storage area, behind the fuel filler. The only time it really bothers me is when the window is only part open and sucks the fumes into the cabin. Can't see any fuel leaks. I tried getting at the hoses and such, but they are really packed in tight and it looks like I'd have to remove the tank! Any suggestions? What do I do? |

Hatch problem- the glass separates from the frame over time.(mine has) It seems like the normal place for this to happen is the drivers side, at the top. Water can, and will, leak in through the separation of the glass. I have not yet tried to fix mine because it seems like a real pain in the ass. Do a search on the forum to hear other peoples stories.
If the hatch seal is leaking then this will suck in exhaust fumes while driving and it will smell like exhaust inside the car. The fuel vapors might be coming through the leaky hatch seal too.? Is there fuel leaking under the passenger side rear tire area? Leak in the rear passenger floor? Never heard that one before. Could be from the sunroof, or from the battery area. The battery will leak and cause rust then a hole. When it rains the water will go into the battery compartment, run all over the DME(computer), then go under the carpet by the passengers feet. I am not sure if the water could make its way all the way back to the rear seats. How long have you had the car?

A hole in the battery tray can soak the rear passenger footwell. I know because mine was doing that for several months after I bought it and I couldn't figure out why. I used Wurth brushable seam sealer on top of my aluminum flashing patch, and no more leaks from the tray. I can flood it with no drips.
However, there still is water getting in from somewhere up there! I now suspect the fresh air blower shroud... But yes, battery tray can run back to the rear seats. |

Thanks for the answers, gents. I've inspected the battery area a couple of times. No sunroof. It looks like the paint and metal is all intact, so I don't think it is coming from the battery area. However, thinking about it, I did have a leak around the top edge of the front windshield, but I really have a hard time believing it could get past the whole front passenger carpet without leaving it soaked also. I'll have to inspect the hatch seal around the top more carefully. It is not so bad as to let in exhaust fumes, but it does leak around the whole back edge at the bottom. Thinking about that makes me think it is the hatch seal, though I have tried sealing the edges, it has not been very successful. Well, it is raining now in Virginia, so I'll look later.
The fuel smell comes from the fuel recovery vapor tanks behind the right side in the rear well, where there is a metal cover. There are no fuel leaks, just a strong smell, probably fuel vapor recovery system? How do I get that stuff out? I'm an excellent all around mechanic and electrician, work on aircraft, but it is jammed in and I don't know how Porsche got that stuff in there!! |

There are drain tubes by the sun roof to drain off any water there. Inspect the drain hoses for stoppage and or being loose, broken, cracked.
Vacuum tubes, hoses, are much cheaper at your local auto parts store - same stuff mostly just in bulk...Get the same size and cut length to fit.

Note-- I do not have a sunroof!
Does anyone know where I can get the wiper motor fiber worm gear and shaft? This is the inside the housing with the contacts. I just want the gear, not another motor or wiper ass'y. |
