Porsche 924 firing order

I've searched and read all I can stand and I can't get a clear idea of what order the wires go onto the distributor... I cant find an illustration ANYWHERE so I thought I would try this...

^ Pic is taken from the driver's side, sorry about the quality

The rotor points to A when at TDC but the "notch" is on D.. can someone please give me a clear answer? from what I've read it should be:

A = 1
B = 3
C = 4
D = 2

But the engine stops itself dead when I try to start it in that order...

You sure it's spinning the way you think it is?

Hmm... typing that first, I meant the rotor... but now I remember also that a 924S/944 starter will spin an NA 924 backwards, if installed... hope you're not fighting that?

No, sorry, they don't much look different...

I trust the crank is spinning clockwise?

FWIW, those cyl number placements do sound correct to me...
