I have some nice shiny new rear rotors for my newly acquired '87 951 but can't budge the caliper retaining bolts off the steering knuckle. Will liquid wrench work? A breaker bar? Also the lower bolt is obstructed by a metal hydraulic fitting. Any tips on disconnection, removal and reconnecting this line?
Thanks. |

If I wasn't going to change the pads too, I'd be careful with liquid wrench. It will help with the froze bolts but may soak in the pads.
Putting a punch on the bolt head & knocking the other end of the punch can jar the bolts a little & help. The hydraulic line is probably the line from the master cylinder. If you take it loose, you'll lose fluid & get air in the lines. This would be a good time to do the every two year fluid change. drew1 |

The bolts generally have a locking agent on them making them hard to loosen. I am not a large person so I generally use an 18 inch breaker bar on them. It takes a pretty good pull for me. I weigh 150 lbs and am of average strength but am older. I guess I'm strong for someone my age but not at strong as someone in their 20-30's.
An impact wrench is good to use. It only applies a torque, not the bending moment that a regular wrench applies in addition to torque. |
