I am looking for a good replacement cat-back muffler for my 88 944 N/A manual. I want stock sound (read--not too loud) and performance, without paying stock prices ($795)!
Someone recommended Danske? Anyone tried these? Thanks! Andy

I had Bodymotion in Ocean, NJ install one for me 3 years ago. Parts and labor was maybe $425. Expensive I thought, but not $800 !!!!
I don't know the brand, but it has "Made in Germany" on it, and was all black. It has a nice low rumble sound to it, but not too loud. Stock sound according to another 944 owner I know. |

I have an Ansa cat back system off my 86na with a gods honest 1000 miles on it. I went for the loud sound so the Ansa is sitting in the basement. It's in excellent condition w/ oval chrome tip ( tip could use a polish) Don't know for sure if it will fit an 88. You do the homework. If interested in want $150. BTW its a one piece system not a bunch of pipes, muffler & clamps.

Ansa = Nope.
Turns out the '88 944's exhaust is different than the '86, so the
Ansa Cat Back system will only fit on the MANUAL version of the '88 944. Not sure what the difference is (maybe a good mechanic could retro-fit the muffler to my car)?

944 Exhaust
I bought the ANSA OEM replacement unit from Vertex. It replaced my stock unit and looks better and sounds exactly like the orginal. Hope this helps. Cost me about $180 if I remember right. You can call them at 1-866-668-0660 and ask for Sidney, he'll help you out.

check out www.summitracing.com for their mufflers. Dynomax Super turbo mufflers are rumored to be the same muffler the Bursch has, but for under $50.

I have the same car (88 n/a) and installed an ANSA cat back AND replaced the stock cat with a Dynomax unit. HUGE difference, great exhaust note and the top end feels like it pulls ALOT harder.

I was told that the ANSA cat-back wouldnt fit on the 88 w/ manual tranny (only the Automatic version)...how did they get yours to fit?

The shop I had put it on had to heat a bend or two in it to get it to fit. It wasn't rocket science from what I could tell- I guess the auto and manual units are pretty close. I was reading on another thread that someone found Dynomax mufflers for $50.
Running the custom pipe would not be expensive (depending on where you are). |

When I went through this thinking last year, I found out that NAPA has a direct fit muffler for our cars. Can't remember exactly but I think the price might have been in the $50 to $70 range. Probably couldn't get more stock than that. Also I believe they have cat replacements as well.

I currently have an ANSA muffler with the standard inlet of a 944 Turbo... what's it? 2.. 3 inch? At least i know the tip is pretty big and not standard on that ANSA. The sound is pretty deep and throaty but still, the catconv seems to kill the most of the nice 2.5l sound. So, when i have the money, i'm gonna buy me a freeflow catconv... IF i find one that fits a 944T as it should..

Question: Will muffler shops install an aftermarket exhaust systems that you bring with you? Or should I go to my service shop and have them do it?
