1983 porsche 944 headlight rocker swith problems

Hi, i am new to this site but everyones quick responses are hopefully going to be helpful in my current issue. a mechanic is working on a 1983 porsche 944 and the tail lights do not work and sometimes the headlights do not work. we checked all the wires and connections and they are fine. so we ordered a new rocker switch because all the problems pointed to a defective switch. we have received 3 switches and none of them seem to fix the problem. we have perfect power in the wires but when we hook them up to the rocker switch only the headlights work and tail lights dont seem to work. any info on previous problems or solutions would be greatly appreciated. thank you Daniel Lenaeus

I had troubles with the tail lights on my 83. While researching it I found that it is a common problem. The fix was to repair one of the connections in one of the major wiring harness plugs behind the fuse panel. You have to remove these plugs one at a time starting with the one closest to the passenger side. I don't remember exactly which plug it is but it was about the 3rd one in. This plug has something like 4 rows of 4 but not every spot has a pin. When you pull the plug out and inspect it you can see where one of the pins has a bad connection.

I fixed mine several years ago and the tail lights (and dash lights) have worked perfect ever since. As far as I can tell this has nothing to do with the headlights so we can't be certain that it's the same problem as on your car but I bet it is at least part of the problem.

Good Luck
