Project low buck 951
 

This weekend grommit and I bought a black 86 951 (Actually I bought it and grommit lent me the money...lol). I'm looking to make this a serious bang for the buck car that can be run in the Silver State Challenge, but also be presentable for Pizza Runs, etc. Currently, the paint is shot (it was a bad repaint and color change).

The first step (besides wheels of course) is to paint the vehicle. Any cheap painting tips would be appreciated. Basically I don't have any fantasies about painting the car myself, but I'm looking forward to doing some of the prep work.

I took the car to 1-day and they quoted me $750 for a base and clear coat (in black). They also said that they'd have the car finished in 2 days (they use an oven).

According to 1-day, I can color sand the clear to bring the car out to a great finish. Apparently, their guys use 220 to rough the existing paint up and then paint over that.

My question there is what if the existing layer of paint is peeling? Do they just sand over that?

Anyone here know some prep basics that I should consider? I'm not going the $3500 paint route but I would like the car to look great and the finish to last for at least 5 years.

My plans are to remove the front bumper, turn signals, SR, batwing, hatch, rear 1/4 window and push the windshield seal up with some string. What do you guys think?

that's a great price for a two-stage paint job. but i hope it's not a get-what-you-pay-for proposition.

it's funny, i'm learning about the paint process, have several vids produced by a professional, and have just purchased a makita buffer & 3m pads to do just the same buffing process of the clearcoat that those guys mentioned!

You know I was so close to getting a car shipped from southern cal........... $2000 for shipping by truck :( .........I was just going to fly down and drive it home.....

?? I am curious to see what a 2500 951 looks like.........that would make a fun track car! You would think it must be a POS........but u never know.

$2500? Holy S*** that's an awesome price for a 951, even if it needs quite a bit of work. Hopefully its not a total POS. I too am looking forward to seeing pics of this car. As for painting, I guess the most cost effective way would be to pay SHAUN to perform his magic with spray paint, lol. Good luck with everything.

Two layers of paint may require that you get it mediate blasted to remove the first and second surfaces. If you do what the guy before you did and paint over the original mess. It will most likely come out the same as the bad paint job that’s on there now. I currently have my entire car being pulled apart and they have to take it down to the first primed surface. Unfortunately it will not be done for another six weeks.

Well, I got mine for $3150, (did have to fly for $117, and drive down ~800 miles) but it doesn't need a repaint.

I got my '86 951 for $3150 too. It was in Encinitas, CA from a guy who needed money to pay some court fines - prob. a good idea. It was salvage title and it had $250K on it, needed brakes all 4 corners, and a shreaded drivers seat. On it's plus side, it had 8 and 9 x 16" Fuchs on it and , . . .well, it was a 951. It is now soon to be track a car-

Paint is all in the preperation of the surface. You may get it sqirted for $750, but you will put a lot more work into it than they will if you just do the min. to make it look decent. I've done a few full professional restorations from a '57 Chevy to a vintage ice cream cart an can see many (cough!) dusty hours ahead of you. If you dont strip it to bare metal (prefered way to deal with it), you will need to at a minimum get down to healthy (read that original) paint on all surfaces of the car. If you have access to a compressor - at least 5HP/60 gal, than buy a good DA sander and dont skimp on it (what is your time worth?) - otherwise buy an electric Makita. Get a big roll of disks from a Paint supply store and some ear plugs and get at it.

Haha, no... I did a compression test and the results were pretty good, and so is oil pressure. So I'm pulling the head, and will take off the oil pan do rings, con rod bearings, a head job, head studs, head gaskets, and change the turbo to something bigger.

To keep a 'budget' 951 a good deal you have to look around a lot for parts, and do pretty much all the work yourself IMO. I've got less than $4100 in mine and it's moving along nicely. This includes cross drilled (cast) rotors, two sets of Hawk pads, braided SS lines (double teflon coated, covered with silicone), etc. I think for a little more than $5k it'll be trackworthy. I've got everything to work except for the sunroof, and trunk release. I think it's moving along nicely...

$2000 for transport is way to high if you see an independant trucker get the number off the truck or talk to him directly i got a price of $500 to bring mine from san fransisco to ft lauderdale but i went through a freight broker because i wanted the security and insurance and peace of mind it ended up costing me $950
