M030 Brakes and Suspension
 
I'm rebuilding a 944 with an 83 chassis. My plan is to switch to late offset with the m030 brake package.

I have the rear end from a late offset turbo minus calipers and spindles. That also came with relatively new koni adjustable shocks (not m030 type but should be a good start). Ground control has what looks to be a good setup of fully adjustable struts.

What's the best way to get m030 brakes all around? For affordability does it make sense to get standard late offset control arms, spindles and hubs with adapters for the calipers and rotors?

Based on mixed reviews of performance gains vs m030, and the fact that I have a nice set of late offset 16's, it doesn't make sense for me to get big reds.

Gotta ask why go late offset, M030 and big reds/turbo brakes on an na? Your car will be heavier and slower. It will also handle worse than stock unless you match ALL the components front & rear.

Also, you don't need the complete rear end (control arms) to change to late offset, just the hubs. You will need the front control arms, spindles, hubs, rotors, calipers and struts at the front.

If you explain what your power plans are for the car you might get some better advise. V8swap? Autocross? Race build?

Not sure I agree with "heavier and slower" but I have to say that the stock brakes with aggressive pads are quite strong. Why do you want to change offsets?

Also, 9FF, you can't put the hubs you are referring to on a car with steel trailing arms.

9FF, I'm doing a turbo swap. My intentions are to track the car. The turbo rear end had stiffer torsion bars and aluminum trailing arms, which is what I wanted it for.

Rasta Monsta, are you referring to stock turbo brakes being strong? Seems like the NA brakes leave much to be desired. I wanted to change to late offset because wheels, suspension, brakes etc are more readily available.

Now I'm trying to decide what route to take for the build. The advice is really appreciated.

@Rasta Monsta, I didn't see the early 85 reference, my bad, yes you need 85.5+ rear aluminum arms then.

@darud35 Turbo I see, it all makes sense now! Then upgrade to stock turbo brakes is probably wise. Same brake calipers for both early or late offset though and there is no advantage to late offset suspension. There are really only two reasons to go late, 1- you want to fit wheels from later cars without using spcers or 2- you need the stronger late hubs. Reason 2 alone is a good reason to swap on a track car.

Thanks 9FF. Anyone have experience swapping to M030 brakes on a late offset car? I've been told Lindsey racing can make an adapter.

Or..would you guys stick with stock turbo brakes? I'd obviously save a good amount of money. I question whether my driving skills warrant good brakes, but at the same time I might be safer with better stopping power! Haha so many things to consider..

My suggestion stick with stock turbo brakes and discs, I don't even think the M030/S4 brakes will fit under your 16's, I could be wrong. Lindsey has the adapters if you go that route.

I dunno. . .large vented discs, powerful calipers. Many, many people race on NA brakes every weekend. However, with the increased power of the turbo conversion, maybe the Brembos would be appropriate.

FWIW, the easiest way to do this conversion is with 86 951 brakes (early offset). Rears will bolt on, fronts will need the 951 struts, hubs and knuckles.

M030 brakes will fit under 16" wheels. Big reds need 17".
