I bit the bullet

So I just orded $220 of parts (from pelican!!). I got my new water pump and 2 new motor mounts. Mounts i'll have a shop put in, but the pump looks like an easy do it yourselfer. Any suggestions or catitions I should take. I'll probably have some good help, just wondering

P.S. It's the extra water pump a turbo has.

Why not do the mounts yourself? I did it with zero experience (it was my first job) and got through it fine. It's a one day event if you do it right.
You could email me for details:

Well the problem is I live in an apartment and I don't access to anything besides a good set of hand tools and a couple friends (one who has done all this on a 944). So hrm....I dunno if I really could? No life besides stock jack

OK, you will pay a shop for 2 hrs of work at least, maybe up to 4 to do this opperation. If you invest $50 - $100 into a small, decent floorjack and some GOOD jackstands (Walmart), you can totaly do this in one afternoon and get to know your car better :)

Turbo motor mounts should take you a long time if you are not familiar with the 951. The NA mounts are cake and a walk in the park comparitively speaking.

One hint - chamfer the top of the bolt holes on the new mounts (if they are the aftermarket ones like I bought from Pelican). It took us 3 hours to do the mounts on my 89 turbo mainly because the cheap aftermaket motor mounts are nearly impossible to thread a bolt through while the mount is in the car.

Best of luck - budget some time for this one.

Bogo - did you buy Minh's red 87 951?

bogomili 04-05-2002 03:07 PM

Eric

Yeah, that's me. Somebody had to do it :)

It isn't the perfect car I had thought (what ever is) but I dont regret the purchase one bit. I just changed the Trans oil yesterday, only 1 qt came out and 3 went in . . . The tranny sure shakes a lot in 4th gear, not as smooth as my ratty '86. It doesn't have an O2 sensor anywhere, poss. to guarantee rich af up high, and boy the repaint on it has some funky things going on w/ it. . .

Did you get the CF hood off it or was that someone else? What did you think of the car?

A few months ago I took it for a spin around the block. Email me offlist if you want to chat sometime. Nice car!

Sorry Goku, Erick is right. Last time I did this was on my 924S and I didn't think about the extra a 951 would be. My bad, still, I think it wise for you to do yourself and save the $. If you have a shop do everything on your car, you will be living in it!

Just kidding. I'd be more inclined to have a shop do belts/waterpump than M-mounts, belts are pretty critical to get right.

Well it sounds kinda fun. I've been wanting to do more stuff on my car. I have a friend I've mentioned a few times. He was a Porsche machanic for a while. He fully restored a 914 (holy cow I need to post pictures sometime...it was that good). So he knows what he's doing. I'll see if he think it's doable. Didn't even think about it. The shop I know will do it in 2 hours. 60 and hour so 120. If getting a lift and jack stands it much more than that i'll have to think about it since i'm poor :P. I have a 550 dollar to do list. Plus more eeeek

i have never changed a water pump but ive read many posts about how difficult the snap rings can be to remove

Scott R 04-06-2002 09:48 AM

The snap ring is the least of your worries. Its the bolts in the block. Heat and water fuses them into the block. I had to extract two of them. The heads just torqued right off!

Goku 04-06-2002 09:51 AM

Now this is the extra water pump..very easy to get to. It's not the one that is on all 944's, but the extra one that is easy to get to. If my roomates camera was working i'd take a picture of it.

Damn, sorry I am asleep this morning! Been working way too late these days!
