OT: engine swap

I am putting a new engine in a 1990 RX7, does anyone have any tips or tricks for swapping an engine?

What about any special tools I may need?

Anything is appreciated.

Humm.... Well, I didn't see where you were going to transplant a 454 big block in there so.
It is mostly the little things. A clean work space with all the tools you can imagine using for the change out. Lots of rags and containers for old fluids and such. Be SAFE and look a little ahead. I generally keep as much intact as is possible. Some people bag and label bolts as they take them out, photograph assemblies etc. I just prefer to lay things out like an exploded diagram on a bench, makes for quick reassembly. Double check the tightness of everything as you go. Palce a large pice of cardboard (I have used carpet) under the engine before you start to catch those little dribbles of oil and antifreeze. Replace it befor you put the new one in and you have a cleaner place to work. I haven't done an RX7 specifically. Good luck!

I did a 13B in a 1989 RX7. It was EASY EASY! I took the tranny of seperate, but I don't think I needed to. As a matter of fact that tranny only weighs a few pounds and I did not even use a tranny jack! Only thing I did wrong was I left one of the firewall side grounds on and started lifting! Broke the ground of course! But I have done two easy motors in my history one was a RX7, the other was a 1973 International Scout. Both are about on the same difficulty level.

On another note, what happened? Was it the GM Apex seals? Or did you loose all of the oil pressure?

Thanks for the replies, I have been doing most of the things you mentioned.

I bought the car in Dallas and drove it to Idaho when I moved here, Then sold it for $4900. A few months later I bought it back with a bad engine for $900. I then found out the guy didn't put antifreeze in it. That mistake cost him $4000.

Well anyways , I got a used motor yesterday. when I get it in I'm going to sell it to buy a 951 (with other saving of course).

Mountain Home is about halfway between Jerome and Boise.

Do you come up here often?
