Cool Early style sunroof help

I have a 86 Turbo and the sunroof will not latch or lock in the rear. When I push the button all I get is a nasty sound. I believe the transfer box is jammed. Should I try to fix the transfer box or should I update it to the later style. My mechanic reccommends the latter, but I am looking for the cheapest fix that I will hopefully be able to do myself. Any advice?

Its probably the sunroof gears grinding on the drive cable. Replace the gears, they are easily purchased from the dealer. Then check and adjust the microswitches on the motor. This usually happens when the cable is allowed to travel to far and chews the gears up. With the correct adjustment the motor stops driving the cable at just the right height. This is an easy reapir and absolutely a DYI.
