Clutch went KABOOM
so my clutch blew up this week while going home from work
a muffled POW and a whiff of burning rubber (86 NA) the throw out bearing has been making noise for a long time but I was thinking that the disk would fail when it got too thin and would start to slip ok, I finally understand why they don't make the disk with the rubber center anymore I really should have taken this job to a shop and have them deal with it but I decided to do it my self today I got the tranny and starter out and next weekend I hope to get the flywheel out and then maybe the following weekend I can get it all back together after the flywheel gets resurfaced the grease in the CV joints is pretty much toast but the balls were still shiny so I think I the joints are ok the boots show some cracking so I want to replace them the joint on the tranny side looks straight forward but the wheel side I'm not sure about has anyone done a CV reboot? The wheel side had a lot of crud on them and I didn't have time to really take a good look how to take them apart maybe I should repack the wheel bearings to while I'm at it Last edited by otto_kretschmer; 01-22-2012 at 07:06 PM.. |

The balls are the hardest part of the CV joint. It's the other parts that wear out,
specifically the groves they roll upon. I found that the cleaning stage took the longest. |

is the cv joint on the wheel side an integral part of the stub axel?

All 4 CV joints are held in place by six 8mm triple square bolts. On the axle shaft, the CV joints are held on by a circlip. |

cleaning them is a pain. Also, don't take the actual joints apart if you can help it! Besides the fact they are a PITA to put back together, unless you get them assembled with every piece exactly as it was, they develop more backlash due to slight mismatches in tolerances of the worn parts re-wearing into each other. Ask me how I know.
