changing bearings in the torque tube

Hello
i just took out the mechanic (engine trans, bla bla bla) from my 1988 951. Gasket were deads and i had a weird noize in the tany.
When i was on neutral with the clutch off (no foot on it) i had a noize just under me. Push the clutch.... no noize anymore. When i was in any gear on the road, no noise, maybe a bit, but praticly not.
I had the 4 bearings in front that were dead. (done)
1 ball joint in the front (done)

i have the torque tube in my hand, no trany no engine, i spin it and i sense that there could be something going wrong but doesnt look like that bad.
What could it be? i got told by my mechanic (before he had the torque tube in hand that it was the torque tube)
When everything is removed, what could i change. seals, clutch, timing belt, water pump?, valves?. its my first porsche.

the body is all on the primer and there is no wheel, no shocks, no brakes, nothing under the car or in the engine bay.

i am going for a total restoration for this winter.

sold my Impreza RSTI to put some money on a real car that worth to spend th time on it.

just sold my phone dials as well... (just saw those wheels and im going for them even if i dont like chrome. but i think on this black car it could look great 18" 400$) Pneus/roues mags original de porche 911 2001 chrome Usagé à vendre ou à louer à Sherbrooke. LesPAC.com - annonces classées

thanks to all advice
sorry for my bad english, i hope your eyes are not bleeding!

alex

If you have the tube out by all means have it rebuilt if you can afford to do the job. I believe that they make some bearings that are an upgrade from the originals. Maybe do some looking around for bearing upgrades in this forum.

There have been many on the board here who have rebuilt the complete Torque Tube - Some fellows are even making new and improved parts for the rebuild (Bushings and Bearings) - Do a search for these postings

Next I would go to the classified adds and post an add for someone to rebuild it for you, if you do not want to do it your self.

You can also search for and find a great used one and replace it...

Those late offset 911 Wheels should be a direct fit for your '88 Turbo

I rebuilt my torque tube when I redid my clutch this past summer according to the instructions on Clark's Garage. There's also a good thread in the Tech section at 944online that follows the same process with lots of good pictures.

It was my first time pulling a clutch as well. It's not a difficult job, just one that requires patience and care. I invested in a good brass hammer to do the job.

The only thing that could be a further complication is if the bearing sleeves are ruined and you have to have some fabricated. Even then, both Clark's and 944online have the spec sheets already made out to take to the shop! (the upgraded parts mentioned above avoid this issue)

With bearings and tools, my cost was around $150. From what I've read, sending one out for a rebuild runs about a thousand.

Likely I will have to face the same issue in the future. Being in Oz I am at a certain disadvantage unless I want to do the refurb myself. I'm led to believe it is a bastard of a job.

Read here Torque Tube Rebuild Services

I would think if you are going for a long term love affair with the 944 you'd do well to get the improved version. But it is not cheap. Quality never is.

Make sure your splines are in good shape too.

Alpom, I noticed the same exact noise with my trans. Are you sure it is the torque tube bearings and not the shifter rod connecting the shifter to the trans? I understand the connections wear out.

I thought the noise was coming from the clutch or torque tube as well, but if I pulled back on the shifter just a little, little bit, the noise goes away competely.

Day trip, it's a 400m roundtrip. They will rebuild a TT for you and you send yours back in exchange.

Drive to Derby, VT with your old TT.
Register the TT at US & Canadian customs. No taxes to pay if you return with said TT.

Pick up your rebuilt TT at the UPS store in Derby and return your TT in the same package.

to gorrilla foot: same thing.... if i have the cluth pushed = no noise
if i am at idle, neutral position clutch pulled (no foot on it) some noise
when i am in any gear there is a small noise if i remember well but if i pull the shifter there is less noise

could it be only the shifter? or 2 things?

to 9ff : not a bad idea.

Exactly the same, Alpom. I had my mechanic look at it and that was his conclusion as well.

Since you have it out and it IS a 23+ year old torque tube, you might as well redo the bearings, but I would check your shifter linkage for play at either end. The cups are plastic and wear.

alpom eventually I need to rebuild mine as well.

The way to go seems to be ordering the super bearings that are an upgrade. Let me know when you are ready to order I may want to order with you and perhaps we can get them shipped to Vermont or something and avoid the high shipping and duties they will charge us.

Also I would be interested in getting together and doing both together as this job scares me a bit.

those bearings are too expensive for me for now. priority is the paint job and the engine.
ill bring the torque tube at a performance shop and see what we can do with this.
i could find stronger bearings that fit there from general bearings here in quebec.
if you need 944 or 911 parts pm me.
