Sway Bar Bushing Confusion
 
Continuing my winter projects on my 88 924S, I thought replacing those mushy inner and outer sway bar busings would be a quick and easy job. So I measured the front bar and determined that 23mm parts were needed. When they arrived the inner bushings, 477411053J fit the bar, but was too small for the link housing. So I called my local Porsche dealer and they ordered more parts, same problem. The part that came off the car is 951343794.0 The dealer can't find this part in the data base, so we are going to try 951343794 02, listed as a 25.5mm bar. Has anybody been down this road?

Odd. There is a split at the 87 944 for the loop that goes around the bushing, and for the bushings themselves. Seems the bushings may have changed OD?

For the inner bushes you need 23mm specific parts. for the outer bushes (or as they are called Drop Link bushes) there are two types:

1. for cars 20, 21.5, 23, 24 mm Part# 951.343.793.00
2. for cars 25.5, 26.8mm Part# 951.343.793.30

Not the case for a 924S unless a non-factory bar was swapped on. Also, the above list describes only 87+ parts.

My bad, didn't read the op part where its says 924S :o So no drop link I guess?

Only numbers I could find for the 23mm 924S are: 23mm inner #477411053J; Outer #171411314A if that helps any.

The 924S does have a split loop that attaches to a bracket for the inside stabilizer bar bushing. The split loop housing has a diameter of about 1 and 5/8 inches. Bushing number 477411053j fits on the actual bar, but is too loose inside the split loop. Perhaps the previous owner had some modifications done, but unlikely since the car is so stock. My assignment is to find a bushing that fits on the bar and slides inside the mounting loop. The old bushings that I removed, part number 951343794.0 meets those requirements but we can't seem to find it any where in the Porsche drawings.

Curious. I'd say just get a pair of split loop brackets that fit the bushings you just bought, and be done. Otherwise you'll have to 1) find these unobtainium bushings, or 2) probably upgrade to a larger sway bar whose bushing will fit the larger loop brackets.

Solex, I think that part number is missing one digit at the end (revision number).

Unfortunately that is all I have to go on, that is all the numbers on the bushing. The dealer ordered another set of bushings, 951343794.02. They fit the split housing great, but are a little loose on the bar being 25.5mm. I think that when the split housing is bolted tight that might reduce the extra 2.5mm. If not, perhaps the O.D. of the bar could be built up slightly.

That's the turbo part number, but I have no specs. Where did you find them?

You are trying to do this without PET? Tsk tsk.

Go to Porsche.com and download parts catalogues for 924S, 944 (2), 944S2. I think they are under Porsche classic.

Thanks for all the help. The 951343794-07 is for a 21.5 mm bar. The drawings listed part number 951343794-00, accommodating a 20,21.5, 23 and 24 mm bar. It appears that this part is the closest option that I am going to find.

I'm in this same situation with my '87 924S:

Front sway bar center bushes: ordered 477 411 053G (happened to order two sets, both the same)

What came out of car: 951 343 794 00.

Inner diameter of the 477- bushings OK, but outer is 35mm, whereas the 951- bushings are 40mm.

Would re-use the car's 951- bushings, but one was swollen +10% (dripping ATF from PS system?), so I need new.

Our host doesn't show the solution, but the Brits in FLA do.

One question: does the outer bushing have different ID's available? PET and online searches (incl. FLA supplier) seem to indicate not. Reason I ask: new ones have 13mm ID, ones that came off the car 16mm.

I realize this is part of the hodge-podge parts bin mystery that is the 924S!
