Hey, congratulations for this sites longest sentence....
Some of us have looked for the holy grail replacement to that expensive timing belt tool. Your spring device would have to measure deflection as well. There just isn't a lot of room to work with in there. I've tried the Kriket ($12) and lost all confidence with its accuracy. To be frank, and I say this at my own risk with no disclaimers, I tension my own belts by feel. I've done this 4 times now on my 84 944. I inspect the belts every 5,000 miles and have a strong sense for how these belts are suppose to feel, sound and smell. If you're new to the site, do a search and you'll get a ton of information on this subject.
