The Ultimate Ultimate 944 Camper!
OK... now imagine this: My sweetheart and I arrive at our favorite campsite, slide and fold the front seats forward and fold the rear-seat backrests down. A carefully cut and painted piece of plywood fills the gap behind the backrests, thus extending the "floor" of the 944 camper.....and a double air mattress is inflated to fit this floor perfectly. The rear hatch is now raised, and a custom-built car-tent extension (vestibule) is fitted around the hatch...providing extra space, privacy, and protection from the elements. This vestibule is staked to the ground, extends back from the car a ways, and had a zippered, mosquito-netted doorway, allowing entry from the rear, and is spacious enough to store our other camping gear to allow room for our sleeping bags atop the air mattress. Also, while we'd usually sleep with our heads rearward... we could also turn around with heads forward and remove the sunroof to do a little star-gazing - perhaps after installing the bug-screen insert in the sunroof opening...to keep the pesky buggers at bay!
Yeah...slow morning at work...time to daydream. But I have actually given the above some thought, and will try it over the upcoming summer. Needless to say, I'll chime in again on this when I have some results! |

If that does not work, you can always take the top gear approach and bolt something to the roof for extra space....

Or you could put a tent in the back. Ours fits a king size air mattress in one of its two rooms.
