Dumb mistake
I just want this in out there so people can think about it before they do this. I just bought a 944 turbo and am super happy with it. Working out bugs here and there like everyone else, but the car is in pretty good condition i think. It had a sound system installed where the back seats used to be (he gave me the original back seats too in case I want to switch up), but the sound system is not hooked up. I figure I can mess with this later.
I go to show my new car to my mother, go fill up the 20 some odd gallon tank with premium gas (ouch) and go to lunch with her. I come out, and there is a puddle under the car. I touch it and smell it, and it is gas. Then I look under the car, and gas is literally pouring from around the gas tank. Bring it to a shop across the street thinking I pulled a fuel line or something. We jack it up, cant see anything but rushing gas. take it down and unscrew the plywood (yes, plywood) from the trunk. There is an amp in where the spare wheel is. It is screwed into the side closest to the engine. I see old gas inside the area. Not believing it, I unscrewed the Amp and sure enough, gas comes spilling out of the screw whole and the screw has old gas on the end. I am not perfect, nor some car expert, but please dear God people, LOOK BEFORE YOU DRILL INTO A CAR!!! This is simple. If you see a gas tank right on the other side, lets not put a hole there! I hate people. |

I hope that you got a good deal on the car, at least.
There are used tanks for sale on Fleabay all of the time for not too much. That or someone here probably has one. You will need to drop the transaxle and supporting crossmember, but that is not too hard to do. And I can understand the people sentiment - I have given up on people doing a good job with any of my cars, so I do it myself. Good luck, Keith

Darn shame. I think everyone on this blog site has a story or two about these great cars. It would be good to let us know year and model and where you're located. This way someone in your area might be a 944 afficianado and can help with your issue.

Hate to sound getto about a fix but I punched a hole with a scredriver in my gas tank on a fiat x1/9 many years ago and was able to put a screw with a rubber washer in there and went over it with this gas tank repair sealer in a tube and it worked till I sent the car to the junk yard after a few years. If you are able to see and get to the hole you might be able to fix it without droping the tank.

i got a decent deal on it. my only issue is i live in herndon va in an appartment building with a community garage, so i cannot drop it myself. i have a friend of a friend who opwns a few garages though, and he is giving me a good rate. plus i got a tank for about 125 shipped, which isnt bad. the car is a 86 951. pretty good condition otherwise. only other issue is a wierd electircal gremlin where the turn signals arent working right with the headlights or parking lights on, and the cv valve i think is bad. only getting 6 psi on her, but i already have posts on these two issues. just wanted to rant you know?
feel free to share other storries of what dumb people did! this could be a forehead slapping thread! |
