manual steering for 87 na?

Have a 87 944 na who's steering is leaking at the rack, & hoses to the res. Was thinking a manual rack would simplify things when it comes time to replace. Has anyone done this? All input is appreciated

Yes. You need a manual rack from an '83 or earlier 924/944, as they were not offered later than that. (Except on uber-rare clubsport or cup cars). Then you need the later tie rods. I think that's all, I don't remember.

Some people also de-power the power rack. The advantage of the manual rack is it has a bigger ratio making it easier to turn.

Someone surely will chime in with a complete shopping list for the conversion.

Be safe, cheers!

924 rack will not work. You need an 83 rack, tie rods, and intermediate shaft (jointed shaft from the rack to the steering column).

You also need at least one new rack mount rubber. The RH side is definitely different.

You can also remove everything, grease the rack really well and install it with no pump/fluid. Theres a write up on how to do it somewhere out there. A manual rack and everything you need will set you back a serious chunk of change

Or not. Just bought the complete setup for our race car for $125, plus a pair of Rabbit tie rods I got new for $15 each.
