A/C Conversion R134a
 

Is there a good thread with pictures on how to convert the 944 series to R134a? I am looking for a more detailed thread that can show me exactly what O Rings need to be changed out as well as trying to change the compressor oil.

I remember a couple of your recent posts. A little background...

You mentioned your mechanic replaced your compressor because the clutch was dragging. In another you mentioned you wanted to wait until your uncle with all the tools could help.

There are many DIYs on converting R12 to R134a.
The best information to use is the Porsche conversion info found on FRWilks site:

Pelican has a conversion kit I bought. Many parts and valves. 944 Not listed but it works.

You can get a large or small kit of "O" rings at AutoZone.

Griffiths (member kuehl) AC web site has a lot of information on conversion.
Specifically if you do not have to replace all "O" rings if the line is not opened.

If your clutch/coil was defective you may have to do a complete flush and cleanout.

I use PAG-46 nothing thicker (AutoZone), similar to the Porsche recommended ND-8 oil.

Just some basics to consider.

Evap to compressor #10,
Compressor to Condenser #8
Condenser to drier #6
Drier to exp valve #6
Exp valve to evap #8

If the vehicle is R12 (used mineral oil) you can use Ester without any oil compatibility issues.
If you want to use PAG you should liquid flush the system with ac flush (you don't flush
compressors or driers) lines, condenser, evap with exp valve removed.
Can't mix PAG with mineral oil or PAG with ester.
There are some mfg's of PAG's that claim you can, we avoid them.

What weight ester oil do you run? It did have R12 in it at one point. I'm hoping I can get my car all prepped then drive it to St. Louis and vacuum it down then recharge it. Those are my plans. Hopefully it all works out.

I'm not sure if I will flush the system or not. That sounds hard to do is my only thing. I don't have an air compressor so I wouldn't be able to blow it out dry after flushing it.

I like that picture above and it looks like most of those o rings will be replaced when I drop the compressor to change out the oil. What are the hardest o rings to get to? Are they all in the engine bay?

We have been using Ester 100 for the past 15 years without any issues on all brand compressors.

Most o-ring components are in the bay more or less, with the exception of the TEV and evap outlet, check by your firewall. TEV is a PITA on certain years.
