The seat backs are the same left and right.

how hard, do they have to come out?

I've only done it out of the car. its like 6 6mm allen head screws for each seat and an electrical connector for the drivers side.

How does the seat back release work on the inside?

The late seats have a realese on both sides. It's pretty handy.

Thanks

It's almost do-able in the car. Maybe. The problems would be on the inside next to the torque tube tunnel.

You have two Phillips head screws to take off the plastic covers on each side, then two (I think) 13mm bolts per side. The seat back release has a circlip you pop off (on both sides), then that comes off the shaft. Then the seat back just pulls out.

I just exhanged the seat backs on both my cars for the same reason as you. I did it outside the car because I was installing them at the same time, but if I had it to do all over, I'd try exchanging them while in the car.

It's always been a royal PITA for me every time I've tried to switch seats in a 944. Taking them out is a 5 minute operation, but for some reason, getting them back in is always problematic.
