Power Steering Return Line Replacement
I thought this might be of interest to someone working on their power steering gear. In the process of replacing my oil pan gasket and thus taking off my steering gear. I found my return line hose was split on the outlet end and the hose with the 180 degree bend had a flat spot worn in the rubber. I was not comfortable putting this back on. So I took it to a company called Pirtek. They put on a new hose on each end. Well the first try did not work at the 180 deg bend area. The crimped section was much too large to fit the application. So we cut off the hose, brazed a bent tube to the banjo and then connected a hose farther down. Fits like a glove. The rubber hose does have some swivel for adjustment if necessary.
So a new hose is any where from $134 on up as I have found, if you can find it. This one cost me $90. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1336179045.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1336179064.jpg |
All nice and shiny down there - like the 3-piece crossbar.

Thanks. Hoping I dont need to use that for awhile after I install it.

I did sorta the same thing where we were changing engines in my son's 951 recently.
We used his old lines and had a local company called Williams Oil Filter Service install new hose ends, using the old metal lines and the banjo bolt fittings from the old hose ends. I was kinda worried about the 180 degree bend, but the old hose had that, so we installed it that way - works just fine. Your solution for the 180 degree bend is a lot more elegant, though. Total cost for both lines: $55! I was floored. I was prepared to pay at least twice that, or more. New, both lines together are more than $250. We rebuilt the pump at the same time (with a Rennbay kit) and now for the first time ever, he's got power steering that doesn't leak. It's simply amazing! |
