				forgot about the shimmy

I finally got to drive my 944, took it up to fill with gas but I had forgot that I was working on finding the front wheel shimmy. I feel that it is all tire balance. Originally the car had PD wheels which I found were slightly bent so I had the new tires put on my cookies but I think he didn't balance correctly. It's been a long time with paint etc. but I have most all of it put back together. I think the paint turned out pretty good being I did it my self.

Try taking all the rims/tires off and tighten the lug nuts little bit at a time till you get them all torqued down, had to do that a few times, some times if you just tighten one lug with an impact at at time they will warp the rim/rotor

If the car had set for a while, the tires may need to be run a while to get them round again. Ditto on proper torquing of the wheel bolts, going opposite each other, progressively. If you still have it, recheck the balance. How old are the tires and what brand? I had what I thought was a thrown weight on a set of Goodyears that were 3 years old and the tire shop showed me the cord internal separation on their spin machine. New tires all around from tirerack. Problem solved.

3 944's, 2 Boxsters and one Caman S, and now one 951 turbo. Really miss the Cayman. Some people try to turn back their "odometers." Not me. I want people to know 'why' I look this way. I've traveled a long way and some of the roads weren't paved. |

The shimmy was there from the beginning, before I even drove the car I had to put new tires on the front, they were on PD wheels and I had them re balance several times also had the front alignment. I had the tires put on cookie wheels and the shimmy is still there. It may very well be poor quality tires. I will put them on the back and buy good tires for the front soon. I will keep you all updated on this but this is now a car I will drive for fun and not every day like my bike. The shimmy to me feels like the tires or poor balance job.

You could try replacing your struts and ball joints, and perhaps tie rod ends. My early 944s won't tolerate worn front-end components and I chased a shimmy for a long time before I bit the bullet and did the work. I'll bet your wheels are balanced, but with cookies, you never know. They could be bent or out of round.
