Weird sound

Strange high-pitched whining coming from under or near the gear-shifter, almost in the center console armrest area it seems. A metallic sound, somewhat grating, it appears during acceleration in third and fourth gear (ish) and stays upon deceleration. Putting in the clutch makes it go away completely. The sound modulates when I play with the accelerator pedal. I'm a bit worried...

It's not there at idle and doesn't appear generally until the point from shifting 2 to 3

I'm maybe thinking it could just be a loose exhaust? Hopefully nothing gear related. The PO welded on a straight pipe and I'm about to have a shop put the cat back on.

I have to adjust my exh. today. Mine is thumping against the center tunnel. whenever I drop the exh. it takes a couple of tries to get it right.

The 968 has a triangular pre-muffler that rides in the tunnel, and is fairly tight fitting.
Not sure about whining unless it is throwout bearing, pilot bearing or TTbearing.

If the rubber center clutch has been replaced and the TO bearing guide tube replaced at the same time......

Torque tube bearings. Time for a rebuild/replacement.

You could do a couple more checks on the rear CV joints. They might be transferring a noise-unlikely.

You could also disconnect the rear coupler between the transaxle and TT. Just remove the 2 bolts and slide the coupler back towards the transaxle. Start the car.

Do the same tests you mentioned---pressing in the clutch....ect.

If the "metalic, grating" noise is still there it points to the TT.
