Power steering issues

Greetings all,
Last winter I rebuilt my power steering and have been driving for a couple of months now without any leaks. That's the good news. The less than good news is that the car has recently developed a hard spot in the steering when turning left. Not every time but sometimes as I crank in left turn I get resistance and have to push a little harder. It happens real quick and them goes right back to normal effort. I took the power steering belt off and the problem went away, steering nice and smooth and tight (actually feels kinda nice without the power steering, would leave it off except for the work required to get around the parking lots.)

Any thoughts on what might be causing this?

When I had this stuff all apart I never could figure out how it worked, how the [pump and fluid helped push the rack back and forth. It's a mystery.

Thx,
Jon

Well it's getting worse. It is really jumpy on left turns now, definitely the power steering.
My only thought short of buying a rebuilt unit would be to flush the system and refill with new fluid, hoping that maybe a little dirt form my rebuild got in and is plugging something up. Long shot, I know. I was careful to keep things clean with my rebuild but something may have gotten in. What can I use to flush the system?

Thx,
Jon

Jon,

You did not mention where you got the PS rebuild kit.

Travis at Rennbay would be able to help if you bought his kit.

Porsche 944 / 928 Power Steering Rebuild Kits - Rennbay - Porsche 944 ball joints, power steering, brakes, odometer gears & accessories

Bruce Arnn at Home has a DIY if you did not see it already.

Steering Rack

The only fluid to put in the 944 PS system is ATF-automatic transmission fluid.
Do not use an ATF with any "leak seal" blended in.
Do not use "Power Steering Fluid"

The seals came from Pelican. The irony is that nothing is leaking so the reseal was successful.
I kept everything very clean and cleaned out and flushed the resevoir before reassembling but I did not flush the pump as described above. I'll get some more Dextron II and try again. I'm not too hopeful.
I did have to beat the crap out of the shaft coupling to get it apart for the first time in 25 years. There is just no good way to get it apart short of a lot of force. Everything looked ok but maybe something was damaged. Unless someone has some specific suggestions of something to check, I guess I'll pull it out and swap it for a rebuild.

It sounds like you could be getting air into the system somewhere. Large air bubbles passing into the fluid system will feel like the assist is jerking especially when turning the wheel at low RPM. It could also be one of the pressure relief valves being stuck but from how you describe it I would lean more towards air in the system.
Give me a ring if you like and I will be happy to help diagnose the problem and track it down. It is probably something simple.
