crank reference sensors revisited. (hard starting when cold)
 

ok, yesterday i took both crank reference sensors out (talk about a PAIN IN THE ASS JOB!!!!). they were both dirty so i cleaned them. on reinstallation, the engine ran much smoother and started much faster.

but then....

this morning, hard start like before. it was about 40 degrees last night and 43 when i tried to start the car.

boost/jumpstart doesn't help it. and when/if the car starts up, i smell lots of fumes like it's running rich/micture is off.

but what i DID notice is that one of the crank reference sensors was dented on the side. it looked like something had dinged it. is there a measurement i can make using my multimeter to see if the sensor itself is damaged.

cleaning them DID help, but i'm wondering if a damaged sensor could be causing the hard start when cold, and if the dent in the side has something to do with it.

would there be a measurable difference between a "new" or good one and the "damaged" one?

i just looked at those pages and i think i'm adding two and two together here:

could an incorrect GAP cause the hard start when cold? seems like it could with a gap of .8mm.

Where are these sensors at on a 83' 944? I need to check mine as well.

They are located on your clutch housing.

If your car is running, they are fine, bad sensors will cause the car not to run at all or run very very poorly.

yeah, the way i found them is that on the back of the intake manifold, near the firewall, is a bracket. there's two things plugged into this bracket. follow the foot-long black cable down and you'll see these little black plastic things bolted to the top of the clutch bellhousing.

they look like this when removed:
