Horn isn't blowing...

Heavens to Murgatroyd, it seems the horn on my new-to-me '87 924s doesn't work and I've run out of ideas. Here's what I've done:
  1. checked horn at the source (undid the crimps and applied 12 volts)--it works
  2. jumped 30 and 87 on the board and the horn worked
  3. replaced relay--no sound
  4. removed steering wheel and cleaned the contacts, checked connections--all seemed well
  5. bent contact just to be sure it's making a connection--no sound

I, as always, would sure appreciate any and all suggestions.

Thanks!

Roger

Have you tried turning the wheel while blowing the horn? could be the steeing wheel horn contacts are slightly warped

The horn switch when activated supplies ground to pin 86 of the horn relay, which activates the horn relay when the key is in the on position.
Check the horn switch fuse which is connected between pins 1 and 2 of the horn relay.

There is a (brown) ground wire between the steering rack and the crossmember. If the wire is not connected (it bridges over the rubber mounting grommets for the rack), the horn will not work.

Could be that the horn under the driver front side rusted and fell off. Can you see the two horns from underneath?

Harbor Freight to the rescue for $12.99
Installed and they are plenty loud.

The old ones will receive a proper burial.

Just by chance, last time at was at a wrecker, I spotted some nice horns on a Volvo.

Almost the same as the original 944 ones, but they have a better electrical connection.
Same brand "MIXO", also made in France, and the way the mount is identical.
The horns on my 944 did not work, so I'm not sure if the sound the same, but I imagine it's close enough.

Remove the horn relay and check for 12 volts on terminal 85. You have already checked the
terminal 30 voltage when you jumped 30 & 87.

If you remove the horn button and ground the terminal from the contact ring does the horn
work? I had a hard time getting my stock horn button adjusted to work.

A good suggestion. Sadly, nothing.

I replaced the relay but it wouldn't be the first time that the 'new' one was a dud. I will give them a check over.

Thanks, George. I hope getting the horn to sound after jumping 30 and 87 means that the brown is working....?

By the way, where in upstate NY are you? I could use some parts....

Do I need both (and working) in order to get, well, the horn to work? I never thought of that. Well, right now it's dark here in the 1000 Islands and so I will have to check this tomorrow.

I still find it puzzling that jumping 30 and 87 gets results. I wonder if the donor relay is kaput. I will check them tomorrow.

And lucky for us, I guess, we have Princess Auto which is for all intents and purposes the same as Harbor Freight. Mostly anyways and the horns--made in France--are about the same price if I remember correctly.

And thanks!

Actually, no, jumping 30 and 87 doesn't test the ground from the horn button. You will need to get under the car to check it...
