what is the purpose of this bracket on the torque tube, and is it needed?

Thanks

If I had to guess, (and this is only a guess), it looks like a rubber mount goes on that left vertical side, and on the other side of that rubber mount would be an exhaust bracket.

That bracket is meant to catch the torsion bar housing in the event of a front end collision to prevent the engine from being pushed back. The later cars have actual hooks welded on the torque tube that serve the same purpose.

I deemed it weight worth keeping when stripping my car. It's low and I can find another couple pounds somewhere else.

I agree, i would leave it on. The bracket weighs maybe 2-3lbs at most with the u-bolts that hold it on. I actually went through the trouble of sourcing one to put on my car.. i rebuilt an '83 torque tube and installed it on my 951. In hind sight i wish i had found a later torque tube to use but i was trying to get the car back on the road ASAP.

OK, so I was putting the torque tube back in the car and it looks like the bracket wants to go behind the torsion bar tube. is this correct? If it is it's only keeping the tube from going forward.
