944S valve spring removal ?
Does anyone have a good (inexpensive) source to buy a valve spring compressor tool that will work on a 944S head?
Is there a way to remove the springs and valves without the specialty tool? |

Check with Baum Tools or Samstag tools. The one from Autozone will not fit down into the area for the springs on a 16 valve head.

After I had a hard time finding the right spring compressor for sale, I fabricated my own adapter and fit it onto a large C Clamp. Used padding on the valve head side. Worked like a charm.

All you need is something that will fit over the spring without hitting the head around it, not damage the valve/spring, and allow access to the keepers. I cut a section of 1 in square stock with an angle grinder and removed one side so it was 3 straight sides w/two 90 degree angles. Then I compressed the sides with a vise to get it to fit inside the recess in the head. Last, I put it on the bench grinder to even up the sides and get a nice flat surface to put on the spring. It cost $0.50 of metal, 30 minutes of labor, and 2 beers.

Thanks guys!
For anyone who hasn't seen the inside of a 16v head, here is why the commercially available tools won't work... Here is the tool I fabricated for the purpose. 1" PVC is strong enough to handle the load and soft enough not to damage the metal. Total fabrication time was about 5 minutes. Here is what it looks like in place. You can see the windows provide plenty of room for access. I used a large clamp from Lowes (cost $19) to compress the spring. I was originally going to buy an 8 inch c-clamp but when I saw this clamp with the red plastic protective caps I couldn't resist. Here it is in use. You can see one of the wedges has been dislodged and the other is still in place. I found myself looking through the window on one side while inserting the pick through the window on the other side. It worked quite well. |
