vibrating shifter
around 27-2800 rpm my shifter starts vibrating. it has done this as long as I have owned the car. additionally, I originally had a metal shift knob with the clip attatchment, and it rattled like crazy at those rpms. On road trips it always pissed me off, with 2800rpm being right at about 65 mph. I even used it as an indicator of when to shift sometimes
![]() since replacing the shifter with a rubber one, it doesn't rattle and therefore it doesn't bother me as much, but it still vibrates at the same engine speeds. other than that, the tranny shifts fine, save a little bit of wiggle room (but who doesn't have that), the engine is fine, and the clutch i would assume is fine but i can't say for sure since i've never driven another manual car. what is wrong with me/ my car?

Same RPM's this happened to me. Look at my previous posting. My Torque Tube bearing failed. I thought it was the clutch so I had the parts standing by, but I found a used torque tube. It appears to be a common problem. Design flaw if you will. You should check for a used one since they new ones can be very expensive.

Does the vibration occur with the trans in gear and the clutch dis-engaged?

jetmax, was there any noise associated with that failure? (rattling, esp.)? Also, how did you KNOW it was the torque tube before doing all the work pulling it? Or do you just have to pull it to know for sure?

There was some noise with the vibration is was like a growl (GRRRRR) that I have had for about a year with the stick vibrating as well. Then when it failed there was a light pop and then nothing. I took it to the shop who told me it failed. All this time I thought it was my clutch. Since I don't know when the clutch was changed last I'm going to have it done as well. I've put about 75k on the car since I have owned it. Shop said the torque tube was damaged beyone just replacing the bearings. So instead I got lucky and found a used torque tube for $200 for an S2.
