Stuck in 2nd

A friend of mine has a 84 944, and just had the tranny get stuck in 2nd gear. He says the shifter is in neutral...What does this mean? Is the linkage the problem? Or does the tranny need rebuilt? Thanks for the help.

Sounds like a linkage problem. have him check out the bolt with the arrow pointing to it in the picture. it is on the drivers side top of the transmission.

Later,
Rob

Hi Phil, if after you look at this bolt on the top left side of the transmission and it is in and tight and it wont come out of gear then it sounds like the shift rod lockout pin has stopped working or wasnt put back into the trans when it was rebuilt, ask me how I know, the piece we are talking about looks like a round barrel and is about less than a half an inch long it goes between the shuft rod tubes to prevent the other shift rods from being selected...... I hope its your bolt just coming loose, if it is make shure you put on some new safety wire, so the bolt stays tight.....Stan
