Blue oil?? Valvoline synthetic 20w 50.

Hey guys, went and bought a quart of 20w 50 today and all they had was 'Valvoline synthetic racing oil' I asked the Guy at the counter if there is any difference between just regular synthetic and the racing Valvoline oil. He said no, so I bought it when I went out to put it in my car I noticed the oil was blue. Has anybody ever seen or used this oil??

The guy is wrong, racing oil has low or no detergents, street cars NEED detergents.

Should be ok in the short term but change it out to regular (non-racing) oil at your next change.

The color has no significance, my Brad Penn semi-synthetic is green.

Is it the vr-1 stuff? If so, it comes out pretty damn dirty after use for supposedly having no detergent.

Yes there is a street version vr-1 and a racing version vr-1. The racing not only has low detergents but doesn't have anti-corrosion additives.

The reason your oil is dirty is because the dirt is being held in suspension in the oil rather than being cleaned by the detergents.

as far as I know this "racing" oil has zddp additives which is what our flat tappets need. I have been using it with no issues. I don't believe it says anywhere it's not street legal... what could possibly be in oil that would make it dangerous to use on the street...

EDIT: I thought this was the 911 forum, I am not sure if your guys's cars have flat tappets so disregard that bit...

That's what the picture says. I doubt it's actually illegal.

You'll be fine, using it on one oil change is not going to do any harm. Change it out on your next oil service. It's very good oil!

Next time get the 20W/50 VR1 in the silver bottle and not the black bottle. It still says "Valvoline Racing" on it but it is a street oil wereas the black bottle is a racing oil. It has the same zddp levels but with the required detergents and anti-corrosion additives for street use: This one- Valvoline.com > Products > Motor Oil > Racing Motor Oil > VR1 Racing Oil (VR1)

Not this one- Valvoline.com > Products > Motor Oil > Racing Motor Oil > Valvoline® Specialty Racing Oil ("Not Street Legal")

I have noticed the VR1 street-legal stuff - which I've run for some time - has a touch of a blue tinge to it too...

I used the silver bottle which from what you guys said is the street use detergent added version. I can attest tjat stuff is, as posted above, very good oil, i just tore down the engine for a head gasket replacement and the internals were absolutely pristine.
