Radio question

I do not have the original stereo in my car. Only the door speakers function. Pulled the radio and just the door speakers are hooked up, I couldn't find any other wires except 2 red w/black stripe and 1 brown wire going to an un-used 6 hole (female) plug marked with a factory tag with a 2 on it. The wires from this plug run back under the console. I tried jumping the rear speaker hook-ups on the stereo to the wires and got nothing from the speakers. Was quad speakers an option in 1985 and what could the plug and wires be for? Thanks

IIRC my 1983 had quad speakers, two door and two in the rear so yes it would be an option. I thought all 944's came with at least though four

Maybe one of the more experienced guys here know what that is, but to me it looks awfully similar to the design of the window switch assembly o_o

As far as i know they all came with the 2 door and 2 qtr/rear speakers. That plug pictured is from the fader switch? Did you try powering speakers from the harness in here?

Start with the basics - do you have a fader dial in the rightmost switch position of the console? if so, try turning it.

The early cars, and for a few years after ( until maybe '88 or so) only used 2 channels out of the stereo and used the fader dial in the console to split the signal between the four speakers. This is something I wouldn't expect anybody younger than about 38 years old to understand.

As mentioned, I don't believe that plug is for the speakers.

It is likely for a switch that goes in the console that your car wasn't optioned with. I don't think its the fader control - that's a larger switch (but it could be). It could be for central locks, a rear wiper, sunroof, etc. Could be its for something your car has, and the switch is gone.

Looks like its got only three connections. If you identify the colors of the wires you could probably find it, or someone could tell you. One's going to be brown, another either red or green (likely).

AFAIK all late 944's (which your's is) had at least 4 speakers. Some of the 924's (don't know about early 944s) came with just one! , that's what the center vent on the early cars is for. 10 Speaker / HiFi was optional starting in 1988 I think.

As an aside, the plug you show is a very common plug end Porsche uses across models. They used it up thru the 993 model range, maybe longer.

Take care!

I took the whole console out and found the fader switch was disconnected, re-connected it and I have four speakers! After a search of a classic Porsche parts site, believe the plug is for a rocker switch for the front headlight washer which my car does not have. Thanks to all for the suggestions. Fritz
