steering center shifting?
which would cause the steering center to move? steering rack bushings? any specific loose bolts?
when this car came to me, it was driving straight with steering canted a little to the right but left/right jogging of the steering wheel was still good response. after making a slow left handed u turn, steering center was suddenly about 20degrees to the left. |

It might be the bolt holding the steering wheel on has come loose. Depending on the car, you should be able to pop the cover off and see. The bolt requires a 15/16th or 1 inch socket to adjust. This is early to mis 80s 24/44's. GLWR.

Surely the steering wheel is splined or keyed? I haven't had mine off yet. I wouldn't bet a beer that the wheel is your problem. Tie rods, control arms, ball joints or steering rack mounts loose, maybe even wheel bearings...
You have a dangerous steering issue - put the front end on stands and repair the problem immediately. I have spoken. |

The steering wheel and steering shaft are splined, as are the steering intermediate shaft (both ends) and steering rack, the only way these will move is to actually pull them apart.
It may be possible that the PO had the steering wheel off, and didn't get it seated properly before tightening the nut, but that's highly doubtful. But be on the safe side and check it anyway. Check that the jam nut is tight against the tie rod ends, check that the tie rod is tight in the steering rack. Get the car in the air and do a through inspection of your suspension for loose/worn components....you could have the makings of a very dangerous situation there.
