strange noise @ 2800 RPM and above

ok I went on a trip to sacromento yesterday and was cruising at about 90 the whole way sometime on the way back my car started making a noise that sounded like gears grinding. It is definitely coming from the engine and it only happens when i rev to above 2800 rpms. It has been a while since i changed the oil (about twice as long as I should have) and I was running about a quart and a half low when I got back from sacramento - two weeks prior I had topped off the oil. I topped off the oil again today but it still makes the same noise. I am going to take it in to get an oil change when I get back from a trip to texas (I am flying there) but I was wondering if I ****ed anything up badly, should I go in and get a 30 or 60 thousand mile tune-up (I have had the car for 20K miles and have only been changing the oil) anyway I would appreicate your thoughts.

thanks
-pete

is there any way possible that you can record this sound?

for now, just change the oil and the filter. see if after topping it off the noise goes way. i'm wondering if the top end of the engine just got a bit too dry.

good luck!

obin
