Lynn,
Don't streets yourself too badly about the gasket. He is an elusive little bugger who evaded me for quite awhile. Let us know about the "improved" gasket and how well it works. |
Damn iPad auto-correct.

I have things apart, waiting for gaskets. After 40+ years working with cars and motorcycles I have NEVER encountered a gasket stuck to a surface any tighter than this cam tower gasket is stuck to the head. I have (carefully) tried a gasket-scraper, single edge razor blade, MEK, and Permatex gasket remover. The gasket comes off in what seems to be atom sized particles. I've spent over an hour on it and so far have about 4" of the total perimeter clean. It's now soaking with the Permatex gasket remover, and has been for about 1.5 Hr., but so far it doesn't even seem to soften anything. There has to be something or some method that's been used more successfully.
As usual, thanks in advance. Lynn |
Since the last post the gasket has soaked another 2 Hrs. or more with the Permatex gasket remover. It has softened the gasket, somewhat. It doesn't exactly fall off yet, but at least it can be scraped with a single edge utility knife blade held with a pliers. Before the soak, the blade would just skim across the gasket surface and not cut into it. Yes, I am being very careful not to gouge the aluminum! About 75% has come off, along the top rail area, and I applied another coat of the Permatex. Patience seems to be the key.

I'm pleased to say the car is back together and running again. :D Unfortunately, a coolant leak is now up on the to-do list. Appears to be the left tank seal, but will double check the hose, it's connection and the fan control sending unit before I do any major disassembly.
Thanks to all who offered answers and advice!! BTW...I used the Lindsey Racing "improved" cam tower rear cover gasket. Nice gasket and I'd venture more robust than a cork version. Did opt for the less expensive stock type paper cam tower gasket rather than bumping up to their premium version of that one. While I had things apart I also replaced the injector gaskets and "hats" on the injectors. The people at Lindsey Racing are very helpful and pleasant to deal with. Lynn |
