924s Oil Pressure Gauge - Needle is Bouncing

I was driving my '87 924s last night and as I pulled into my garage I looked down and noticed that the needle on the oil pressure gauge was jumping around. I've never seen it move like this before....it's usually very steady between 3.5-5 bar.

Any ideas what this could be?

I've posted a video to youtube: 924s oil - YouTube

Thanks,
SB

If you are using a URO oil pressure sender-the sender has failed.
OEM oil pressure sender will fix the bounce.
FAE oil pressure sender is 2nd best.
Change the sender.

But first,
Check your oil level.
Check the wires are tight on the sender---be careful--the posts are hollow.
Check the wires from the sender to the top of the engine. The wires go over the WP waterpump and the insulation may have cracked due to heat.

Could be the "O" rings in the OPRV valve finally wore out.

Worst--you have cracked your oil pickup tube in the oil pan or the oil pump is shot.

Interesting. Mine does that every now and then and I've been hoping it was just the sender and am too cheap to pick up a new one right now.

Is the engine not fully warmed up yet. 3.5 bar seems a bit high for warm oil at idle. That's what my pressure runs at up to about 3500-4000 rpm. 2 bar or even lower is more typical if you're not using one of those syrup viscosity oils. Either that or the OPRV is not working right from bad o rings or a misaligned cooler housing.

Go with the OEM sender, and buy it from Sunset Porsche and it's about $93

Thanks for the replies.

I checked the sender wires this morning and they were loose. Pushed them back on and everything seems to be working fine now.

I'll take it for a longer drive after work and make sure it's all good....if not, I'll order a new sender.

You really don't have to worry unless the needle swings wildly and hits the '0' when it bounces.
